Now I know how far is too far. I took
my wife and daughter to the Bronx Zoo
yesterday. The elevated tracks make
a sweeping curve as they come into the
station -- a great background and the
platform roofs give great protection
from direct sun.

As you can see, the direct sun in the
background blew out adjacent areas in
shade. (This is with the coated Summar,
and a FISON hood.) Still, I like the photo,
with Melanie in a Feininger moment.

I have a Jupiter 8 coming my way.
Can anyone speculate whether it would
have done a better job of controlling the
flare under these conditions?

Sanders, I'm afraid none of Jupiters is known for good flare control. Many of them are still amazing lenses though.

Sanders,

I would say that it's not far off, and I would be pretty happy with that sort of result given the available contrast - please stop making me feel inadequate ;)

A Nikon 50/2 is good for flare control based on my lens testing results. The Summicron is also good in this area and so is the canon 50/1.8 among other 50mm lenses.

Flare? What flare? looks like leica glow!! Just for the fun of it crop each head into a more-or-less "standard" portrait and see what you think.

How would a summitar do in this situation? Got one today, looks beatiful and I can't wait to compare it to my summar. Alas, that has to wait, as I got home sick today and if the summitar hadn't arrived I would feel really, really lousy :(

I do not know. I am only one rung up the Leica
Ladder from rank Newbie. Remember? :)

I did recently receive a nice Jupiter 8, though,
that will be interesting to try out. I gather it is
a Sonnar clone. I don't know whether it is at
all relevant, but I love the look of the 135mm
Sonnar on my Tele Rolleiflex.

Sanders, I love your all photos I've seen here. When you describe yourself as a Leica rookie, I see you as a master :) Rolleiflex shot of a young guy is simply amazing that I did wanted to go and buy the Rolleiflex but the price of this scared me, thanks god :) of course you're very good photographer :)
