I wonder if any of you out there have any Summar pics that can share and gloat about. The occasion? I just got a blemish-free and problem-free Summar for $81!! I can't wait to test it. (All I need is the collapsible Summicron and I'll have the collection.)

So share your Summar pics, and gloat with me! :p

So this is not taken with a Summar but a Summarit (can't post yet a picture of a lens I *just* acquired in the past 5 minutes!)

I hope to be one in July after Joe buys me one in New York.

tell ya what...i have a very nice walz 'made for summar' yellow filter here that i will GIVE you when you do get your summar 50.

i'm generous but i'm poor.

Stunning results from your summarit gabrielma, looks sharp enough to be a 'cron and great bokeh too! I also like xcapekey's softer "glowing" resuts.

xcape: I remember seeing your pics -- your pics were the ones that convinced me to hunt this lens down! Thanks!!! :)

BTW, what kind of filter does this lens take? I would like to find a yellow 2 (K2, medium yellow, or what you will) for it.

Todd: thanks; I love my Summitar a lot. I find it getting used more than my tabbed Summicron. There is something weird about it, though, at certain distances there is softness in the corners, and for the life of me I cannot explain it; I know it is a "feature" of this lens. When shooting B&W with it I almost always use a yellow 2 filter on it, which is kind of tricky with skin tones and dark clothing. It is a beauty...beautiful "glow" wide open even up to about f/5.6, in the highlights, without becoming awful flaring.

I am excited about the Summar...a true "old look" lens. I would also be very interested in experimenting with a wide range of films I haven't tried before, because sharpness won't be crucial in the shots and yet there is a true sense of acutance and detail definition that comes through in spite of grain. That's one of the things I also liked about the 90mm Elmar.

The camera shop here in town just got a collapsible Summicron for $295 (including the M mount adapter)...if it weren't for my strong desire to slow down, I would have whipped out the card for that one too. I have enough lenses to keep me busy for a while. And that's without my Summarit having arrived yet!!!!

I'm a softie for the soft lenses, I guess ;)

I told you Joe, it is my money you are spending. The challenge is that you need to spend it wisely.

(I will take the filter though, thank you. :D )

Here's a picture I took with a Summar about a year ago. It was either wide open or at f/2.2.

well then. how 'bout i spend your money on one of those canon 50/1.8 lenses and then i just borrow the lens for a while...

i'll bring the filter to new york with me.

gabriel, it's a 34mm filter size.

joe

the walz for summar filter fits on my lenses that take the 34mm filters.

there is no marked size on the filter itself.

I may have to start shopping for a hood for this thingy. I think the hoods for this lens will cost more than the lens in the NY shops.

ray, isn't the a36 a push on hood?
that would make it a 34 screw in.

with this screw in there are no treads for a hood.
it would need to be a push on.

joe

Yeah, you're right. It takes a 36 push-on (A36) or a 34mm (E34) screw-in filter, just like the 90/4 elmar.

That's correct. I just put an A36 on my Summar. It does allow changing the aperture, something that's not possible if you put an A36 on the Elmar 50 or 35.

filters and hoods are tricky....my local camera store happened to have a 34-37 adaptor....great thing about this is that i can share filters between my summar and summitar! i can even use the barndoor shade for the summitar on the summar now...it's a little clunky, but it does actually help in certain situations...

for the summar, i usually put a light yellow for indoors and med. yellow for outdoors...it's actually a neat effect when you have bright hard light hitting a subject with the summar and light yellow filter...the highlights tend to bleed a little a give a nice glowy loook

Doubs: instant vintage. Thanks for sharing!

Backalley: if it's a 34mm threaded, then I wonder if there's a 34-to-39 step-up ring. That would be fantastic. I'm still searching for the SNHOO for my Summitar. I'm still not quite sold on the Series-? adapter for it. I have the vented hood which works not only for the 35 Elmar, but for the 50 Summitar and 50 Summicron (old and new).

gabriel,
it's 34mm for sure.
russ found a 34 to 37 ring so maybe there is a 34 to 39 also.

if i come across one in my travels i'll let you know.
