I picked up this lens from a local camera shop earlier this week and have just realised that:

1.) It doesn't focus to infinity (stops at 50 feet)
2.) focusing ring turns past its minimum 3.5 feet focusing distance
3.) focusing ring hits a patch of resistance between 4 and 5 feet

Have no idea about these old lenses, but was wondering whether you guys could say if any of the above might be issues inherent in the design, or, alternatively, whether they might be solved with a CLA? Many thanks in advance,

it looks like someone took it apart and re-assembled the lens incorrectly, which is easy to do, re-assemble it incorrectly that is.
send the lens out to a known good camera tech that works on lenses.

Cheers, guys - I thought this would be the case but you know how it is with vintage gear - sometimes it has its quirks. The shop's offered me my money back or a repair, so I have tonight to think about whether there's anything else I'd rather have...

It sounds like someone has taken it apart and then mis-threaded the helicoil. It is easy to do - you have to find the right "starting" thread when you put it back together. Not a big job for a qualified tech. You need to re-collimate the lens. At the same time you can have it cleaned and re-lubed, which should cure the binding at 4-5 feet, Worth doing as it is an interesting lens to use. Pretty good to for an old lens. It's design harks back to the 30's Xenon and it was developed further and became the Summilux 50f1.4. One of the longest lasting designs in the Leica lens line.
