Greetings!

I have one Summaron 3.5cm/3.5 that I have done a full CLA (no $ to send it out after I bought it with the M2).

I have been shooting with the lense, and although I am using a very grainy film, I notice quite a bit of vigneting.

These two shots were made at apperture 4 and I would like to know from other Summaron users, if this vigneting is normal on this lense ..

Thanks in advance for all the answers 🙂

I've got the same lens, and I've never noticed any vignetting, though I do tend to use it stopped down. Just checked quickly through what I've used it for, and couldn't find any vignetting, certainly not on the scale of the images you posted. Perhaps you're using a lens hood that's too deep?

I use a square (Walz) lens hood with the 35mm/3.5 Summaron, and I cannot recall any vignetting. The lens seems to be sharp with low contrast.

Sergio, do you have any other shots with this lens in more normal daytime lighting conditions? The sample shots you posted are not the best to use to determine if there is vignetting by the lens.

Greetings dear Frank,

The best pictures I have right now might be these two, the self portrait is fully open at 3.5 and the other one outside should be also at full aperture... but I am not completely sure of that one..

I already shoot some others of sky so I can get into any conclusion on next film development.

I think that is a good suggestion as I can't really see any vignetting in the posted photos but then again I am no expert. A shot with lots of sky might do. The only thing that I see are leaning objects in the photos but that is not a lens issue. I have a Summaron 35 F3.5 LTM and have not seen any vignetting with or without a hood but I have not used it at F4 so I will have to try that out and see.

I got to type faster. Sergio, I think I can see a tiny amount in the outside photo in the upper corners.

Sergio, as (laptop)Rob said, a lot of - older - lenses vignette wide open. It's not too bad. When printing I often burn in the corners and edges to help keep attention focussed into the frame. When using this lens, you can skip this step! 🙂

(I'm waiting of one of these lenses in the mail at the moment.)

Well I am not that worried about the vigneting, it keeps on it's classic look, but was wondering if this is unique of this lense or if all summarons have this particular look...

It seems that the other owners so far didnt spot any vigneting on theirs... so maybe mine might need some work. Maybe I didnt attach everything well ? 🙁 Hope not, but if this persists, and there isnt anyone else that spoted vigneting on this lense wide open, I might re-open it and see if all is correct.

Lets see some more opinions 🙂

Sergio, you've now piqued my curiosity, I'm going to try shooting some wide-open shots on the Summaron today or tomorrow, I'll post some feedback when they're done. 🙂

Have you tried putting some slide film through the camera? That'd likely show vignetting very obviously...

I don't see anything that can positively be idntified as vignetting in those examples. Maybe something is wrong with my monitor.

Hi Richard. Look at post #7, first picture, top left and right corners.

Have you got any wide open Summaron shots?

In the first picture top right...possibly. Top left...nothing in particular that looks like vignetting.

I don't have any wide open shots from my Summaron 3.5. At normal apertures it's paractically perfect. Now I'm curious about how it performs at full bore.

I don`t see vignetting. In the self portrait, I see a shutter problem in that the pic gets darker towards the right. With the variable light in the first examples, you might mistake this for vignetting.

Photograph some eventoned subjects to check the shutter and vignetting.

the pic gets darker towards the right

Ronald, isn't that simply because there is likely a window (light source) to the left? Judging from the lighting on the face.

SergioGuerra: I just got a set of prints back from the lab that included one shot taken indoors this morning with the Summaron 35/3.5, Fuji Superia 200 film, 1/15th at f3.5. No sign of any vignetting at all on the print, though I've yet to scan it in...

It may very well be that vignetting shows more in situations with higher illumination, like the two first shots. I can't see vignetting in the self portrait. If it's my eyes, the vignetting is not too bad.
Vignetting is simply part of the lens character, like softer performance and less sharp corners. I don't mean it always should be there, but if so it is just part of the lens. Wide angle lenses show vignetting more easily. Especially if there is use of filters, because light travels loner through a (coloured) filter in the corners, therefore becoming less intense.
The Heliar 15mm does the same thing: heavy vignetting wide open.
