Hi!

With the leicas I got on the "dead leica" thread I got a summaron 35/2.8 with eyes.

The summaron seems to introduce a vertical misalignment to the RF(the rf without it seems ok vertically). Can I fix it or do I need a CLA?How much would one cost?

Thanks Mike

Check if the lenz is hazy - they have a tendency to do that. If yes I recommend
CLA which can also fix the eye alignment.

If the lens is clean, you can fix the eye alignment yourself. The round one of the two eyes
can be moved after looseing three screws around it (hidden behind rubber plugs). Remove
the plugs with a screw driver, loosen the screws, put the lens on the camera, set at infinity,
and use one of the three screws to "twist" the round eye in place until you have alignment.
Then fix the other two screws. You can cover the screws with nail polish when you are done.

Good luck,

Roland.

The Summaron 35/2.8 is an excellent lens. I was surprised how well it did in my lens tests of 35mm lenses. I second Roland's suggestion to send the lens off for a CLA.

Don charges between US 100-150 depending what is wrong. Sherry's prices are
similar, but with her you can pick between CLA of focus mount, CLA of glass,
or both. Call them and check.

Roland.

PS: you were very lucky with the Leicas ...

I will feel lucky when I get a working one with a lens for a price less than one would cost to get without the hassle of CLA's etc.

A clean 2.8 Summaron is easily worth more than US 500.

The Summaron 35/2.8 is an excellent lens. At mid-apertures it is as good as the Summicron and it is better at close focussing than the 35f2's. The goggled version is a bit of a pain to use as it introduces yet another set of glass in front of the finder and as you noticed, it can go out of whack and need to be re-aligned. It is worth doing and unless you absolutely need a f2, the 2.8 will serve you well. I have found that the 35 goggled versions are quite immune to mis-alignment and once it is set up properly should stay in place. The worst one of the goggled one's is the 135f2.8 which rarely stays aligned!
good deal on your two M3's and the 35f2.8. Have both fixed and dedicate one to the 35/2,8 and use the second one for 50/90 combination. Vulcanite is over-rated anyway and can be replaced with black cloth tape .

Tom,
New skin costs 10-60$ - so I dont worry about that.
I have a 35/2.8 canon(on canon 7) which I like but need a fast fifty.

My only worry is that the CLA woudn't make it worthwhile - I currently have a deal with a fellow RFF member to send both cameras for CLA(which he pays for), see if it is feasable(250$ tops for each cla) and I get to pick the one I keep and he gets the other. We split shipping taxes etc. I pay for the lens CLA.

That sounds like a good deal for both of you. I have the Canon too, both as 2.8/3.5 and 1.8. they are all good lenses but my feeling is that the Summaron is a better lens than the Canon 2.8.
For a fast 50 I would look for the Voigtlander 50/1.5. It is reasonably priced and better than the pre-asph Summilux. The Summicron's are getting on in age and some of the stuff from Zeiss like the Planar 50/2 and the aforementioned Nokton 50/1,5 are better. This comes from somebody who has at least 5 summicron 50's and still use them for that "vintage" look. The DR Summicron is extremely sharp, but heavy and unless you get one with the "eyes" it has limited close up performance (1 meter).
