I bought off ePay a Series 5.5 orange filter.
I thought that the filter hood that is attached to my 40 c would hold it in place , but it doesn't.:bang:
so how does the filter attach to the lens hood, also how do i remove the lens hood????😕
thanks i advance

this is the original filter and i have tried to screw it off, but i do not want to be too rough with it. Should the rbber part of the lens hood hold the filter in place or not?

So do they 'drop' into the recess of the lens or are they held in front of the lens by the rubber hood.

for info the filter is "E.Leitz 85 B Ser 5.5 USA"
and the hood is a Leica 12518 marked c2/40- 5.5 which i take to mean summi c f2 40mm 5.5 series thread

Why not just use 39mm filter thread filters? Won't screw in all the way, but will screw in enough to work just fine. I've never had a generic 39mm filter fall off my cron-c. good luck

The rubber part of the hood doesnt hold the filter. Its the metal part at the rear of the hood that does. You need to unscrew the hood off completely and then place the 5.5 filter on the front of the lens, approximately centering it, then slip the hood over the filter and screww it in. You will see a non threaded area on the inside of the metal part of the hood that holds the filter snuggly.

What brand of series 5.5 filter is it by the way?

it is a leitz 85 B ,

thanks for that i just do not seem able to unscrew the hood, it seems that it wants to bite and unscrew then just turns on itself.

The hood should screw off relatively easily. I have seen a hood jam on an Elmar-C once before (also series 5.5) but the problem there was that it was the rubber hood from a 90mm compact TE that used regular threads but to look at the hood it was so close that it was easily confused for the hood of the Elmar-C.

With series 5.5 filters be careful with poor quality ones as the coating often peels and blisters (Hold them up to the light to see). The bombshell is that its the Leitz filters that often do it. People that claim that Leica filters are the best have never used seres 5.5 filters! To their defence though Tiffen filters have this problem common as well and they are made in the USA, and the Leitz series 5.5 filters are also usually made in the USA. Based on the coating problem with both brands and unusally both filters being made in the USA im pretty convinced that Leitz series 5.5 filters and Tiffen are made in the same place.

So both these brands should be carefully checked when buying this unusual type of filter. B+W and Heliopan seem to be the best brands in this size.

(* Note I have seen one Leitz series 5.5 filter made in Germany but only one and presumably it was B+W)
