Summicron 35mm ASPH to ASPH II upgrade?

I have the previous version of the 35mm summicron asph in chrome, and I'm thinking of trading it in for the current version in black.

Is it worth it? I'm wondering how the new lens hood is, it looks like it extends more than the previous version.

Same optically. More aperture leaves and new front design for the screw-in hood, that does extend further out.

Think I’ll keep the one I have, but if one cannot live knowing there’s an update out there, lord knows there are plenty of users who have already “upgraded”...

The major difference is the lens hood. Now instead of spending a ton of money and getting the plastic clip on hood, that would occasionally pop off, you now get a metal threaded hood like Voigtlander has been using for years.

Your silver Summicron is one of the very last brass construction silver chrome lenses made by Leica. For this reason alone is is becoming a collectible, and no doubt will become a bona fide collectible in the future.

If you can afford to keep,it, do. If you do sell at a later date, you ought to do nicely.

Meanwhile, I can heartily recommend the current 28 Elmarit M ASPH.

Well, only you can say whether it is "worth it." If the new lens tickles your fancy, and the kids or cat won't go hungry, then go for it.

Having said that if you have the previous version of this lens and you are not satisfied with your photography, it ain't the lens, if you know what I am saying...

The latest 35 Summicron, aside from the extra aperture leaves and new hood, purportedly repositioned the elements to render more evenly on digital sensors. I have no experience with the new one to confirm that it's so. I was a fan of the tiny v.1 ASPH on film, though my sample focus-shifted on digital from ƒ/2.8-4 or 5.6. That part was annoying enough to part with it. Replaced by a Zeiss Biogon C, a brilliant optic with no discernible shift and higher-resolving than the Leica @ ƒ/2.8. Really rocks, especially the vibrancy of colors.

I had the V1 asph in the past and loved that lens, I foolishly sold it and later acquired a V2 this year and I just didn't like the new hood. I honestly preferred the V1 hood though I'm sure optically they're equal. I'd keep the one you have 🙂.
