Summicron 40 Hood question..

Hello!,

I have searched and searched but I cant find an answer to what seems should be a really obvious question. I finally have saved up the money and now have an M6 and Summicron 40 (hurrah), and I would like to know if the rubber hood of the Summicron 40 is detachable. It does a good enough job, but mine is old and crumpled and doesnt properly extented, so I would much rather ditch it and replace it with something metal and strong.

How does one take the rubber hood off a summicron 40?

The rubber hood should simply unscrew in the conventional way. It's easy to trim off the rubber from the screw-in ring (but don't take too much off), then fit the Leitz clip-on rectangular hood. I can post some pictures of mine later, after work.

Thank you that would be great!
I try unscrewing it but it will not budge, I think it is stiff or jammed, and I am hesitant to force it incase i mess up the rest of the lens.

Try putting the lens cap on and pushing down slightly as you twist.This gives leverage and often works.

Here's what the rubber hood looks like after it has been cut down to accept the rectangular hood #12526. I trimmed it so that there is a little extra rubber and the hood is a tight fit, making it necessary to use the buttons to retract the inner 'teeth' as the hood is installed. Then I cut a set of four notches to give the four 'teeth' inside the hood something to grab. This was probably not necessary. The new hood fills a very small corner of the 35mm frame when looking through the viewfinder. But that's using the 35mm frame lines with a 40mm lens, so it isn't intrusive. The hood just touches the 50mm frame lines.
