Summicron 50/2 V or Elmar-M 50/2.8

But, if I had to put up with one of them I would choose the Summicron because it provides a stop more speed and very good image quality for little or no additional weight or size penalty.

I would choose the Summicron for its more vintage character. If I want clinically modern, I can use a Nikon sir with Nikkor lens.

If you can afford it the Summicron is the one to get. If not and if you are to choose one of the Elmar 50mm 2.8, get one from the late 60s early 70s. They perform equally good if not better than the late elmars, they are better made, but you have to make sure you get one without haze and spots on the coatings. A point to note with the older elmars is that changing the aperture with the focusing released from infinity turns the barrel.

Money is an objection, because of its finite nature, but I've just bought an Elmar-M from the Bay. I read that it is an improvement on the 1950's Elmar 50/2.8. I will post pictures for evidence when I get it. I want the compactness of an Elmar, and I know my 1946 50/3.5 Elmar works well on my Sony A7S as well as on my III series Leicas. The Elmar-M will make my M3 and M2 more portable.

Probably the Summicron v4 for the focussing tab and f2. But I do love the Elmar M and especially collapsed to carry every day. I'd miss its compactness.
