Please excuse the ignorance, but is there a 50mm Summicron ASPH? IF so, how does it compare in terms of price and performance with the last pre-ASPH?

Thanks

Mike

It does not exist. It compares horribly with the last pre-ASPH, mainly because it does not exist.

There is no 2/50mm Summicron ASPH. Supposedly Leica toyed with the idea of making one in their labs, but it never saw the light of day.

But there is a 1.4/50mm SUMMILUX ASPH, which is a lot more expensive.

The focus (sorry) of Leica's lens development attention may well shift away from the 50 mm focal length, as that renders a rather inconsequential 67,5 mm FOV on the M8. For the time being I would suppose them to concentrate on the short end plus some more lenses for the Digilux3 system. Just my supposition fwiiw.

Magus, I thought you were an asph fan? 😱

Is it the non-asph 50 summilux that's also considered subpar?
It depends on what you like. If its sharpness then maybe yes it is (but then we all know sharpness is a bourgois concept right? 😉). If you go to photo.net and look at Mike Dixon's work with the first version of the pre-ASPH 50 you might have other thoughts.

Leica developed a prototype of a Summicron ASPH in 1989. It was used as a point of reference for the development of the Summilux 50 (2004).
The 50/2 ASPH was a incredible performer, even better than the extraordinary Summicron (designed in 1979). However, it did not make sense to produce it, from a economic point of view.
I think Leica could be considering again the possibility of a new Summicron.
