Hello:
i see that the summicron 90mm asph is darn hard to find new. they seem to be out of stock at all the usual places (e.g., b&h, adorama, popflash). why? is the rationale the same as for the backlog on the m9? or am i missing something?
anyway, i have just been wondering.

Is there more than one version of the 90 A-A? I have one, and did not know there was more than one version. As to finding one, why not shop for used? (Unless you want a latest version that I don't know about.) Did they change the formula? Or the cosmetics?

No changes. There's just a general Leica lens shortage. Try the last E55 pre-ASPH as a stopgap if you desperately need the focal length, you might be surprised. After I bought mine I sold the 90AA.
