I just ordered a 50mm Summicron in LTM without a lens cap. Now, I know that this uses a 39mm filter size, but I was wondering if I could use a 40.5mm snap-on lens cap for it, as neither of my local camera shops carry 39mm thread. It seems that they have either 37 or 40.5.
Thoughts? Should I just order a lens cap off of ebay?

Try this site: www.camerafilters.com They sell lens caps. I have been lucky with them.

It looks like they also only carry 37 and 40.5 caps. They do, however, have 39mm filters.

I may be wrong, but I think you need a 42mm push-on cap.

What I did for my 39mm lenses as well as my most recent addition (CV SL II 58mm Lens Shade) was take it to a local grocery store. For the 39s I remember it was a small can of flavor cubes, the SL II we for a can of baking power. I buy two of the items or more and all is well. I had to try three close products before I found the perfect on.
On several of my Nikkors I have tupperware, others had old yogurt lids and on my 72mm filter loving lenses I use pretty standard (at least here in the US) Hershey Chocolate or dog food can covers. The fit perfectly over 72mm filters that on all glass that big.

Somewhere on ebay you can find generic 39mm screw on caps for about a buck each. I use them on my Summicron and Elmarit. They are very helpful in keeping the lens hood on in reversed position. Caution: If you leave a filter on all the ime, make sure it has front threads. The original Leitz filter on my Elmarit was unthreaded. I replaced it with a newer B+W filter.
