I'm shooting Leica M film cameras for the most part and the lens I'm particularly fond of is the 50mm Summicron Rigid. Yet the lens I shoot the most is my 35mm Summicron v4 because 50mm can be tad tight at times.

So the question is if there's a 35mm lens with a similar rendering to the 50mm Rigid. I love the pastel colours and resolution (sharpness?).
Is the 35mm Summicron V1 a comparable option?

The 35mm Summicron V1 8-Element pool on Flickr looks promising.

Maybe a Summaron 35mm 2.8? If I'm shooting available light, that's my preferred combo

That's also a lens I've considered for a while. From what I've seen/read it renders somewhat similarly to the V4 to those who have tried both. Its quite a lot cheaper than a Summicron V1 too.

Daniel, I don't think that you could duplicate all of "rendering" of your 50mm lens with a 35mm.

I do have some 50mm and some 35mm lenses, never found a "good match in different focal lengths".

Some could be in some situations but not all.

- my view when using my 50mm Rigid Crons : they are not "pastel colours" per see (depend most of the time film used : Ektar, Velvia, Kodachrome (when available) or Vista Plus ...)

- some candidates can be searching for :
a - less contrast or more "pastel" can be have with Summilux 35mm non-asph. (in my case more suitable than Summicron I "8 elem")
b - Summaron 35mm f/2.8 (as noted above) and even "better fit" f/3.5 variety
c - Summarit-M f/2.5/35 for resolution (this one is my best match with my DR Cron same optical cell as your Rigid)
d - old Serenar (Canon LTM) 3.2/35mm for it's pastel look

I think that you may find one of those (or other 35mm, they're plenty out there) and try it (them) with your film/style...

But as is, I think that your 35mm Cron IV can still be good candidate 😛 .

You said it, it's the Summicron 35/2 Type 1 (8 elements).

If you don't have the cash for the above, then the Summaron 35/2.8 is a killer lens in black and white and is also good in colour. This lens in my humble opinion is one of the best - or THE best lens for black and white.

I suggest that the Version 1 Summicron 35/2 is of a similar age as the Rigid Summicron 50/2, and it is the best "match" as these two lenses are of a similar vintage. Both are of top quality, as is well known. I have both lenses. They came to me about 30 years ago with a like-new M3 with factory papers. It was like a "Shiny Chrome Christmas Gift" to me. The craftsmanship and beauty match the superior optical performance.

It’s really amazing that after 60 years, a lens can still be a benchmark one for others.

This says it all. I have the Summicron version I; the Summaron f/2.8, and the Dual-Range Summicron, which is optically the same as the rigid, and I agree completely. They are all meant for each other!

I find myself shooting the Summicron wide open at times when the light is against my favor so the Summaron 2.8 could likely become a nuisance.

I will pick up a Summicron V1 at the local camera auction this fall and try it out for myself.

Thank you for the replies.
