Summicron V4 on M9 found to have issues after incorrect initial assessment

That would be great. Thanks.

I suppose I should maybe consider putting the feelers out for the summicron going for sale. I doubt a v4 boxed will be too hard to sell :D

Oh yes, now that you announced it has problems and especially - "It was found by Malcolm Taylor to have issues in the optical path."

Be honest in your ad Steven.

It will be written on upon it's return if it does go for sale as:

"Fully CLA'd and optically bench tested by Malcolm Taylor, with receipts"

Although I hope when it does return I can sell the 40mm and biogon C as it will finally live up to expectation.

Just had a call from Malcolm to say the lens was done.

His assessment is that the macrolon unit had been tampered with, but he found screws loose, elements not in right various other things. Also the person who "serviced" the lens had not re-lubed the focus helical as he found the original grease in there.

So all in all it was a total dog! Now it should live up to expectations.

(puches air in joy)

I expect I'll be eagerly awaiting the post over the next few days then!

I've owned four 35 Summicrons over the years and have been happily shooting with one of two version 4s for the last 17 years. It is my go to lens for M photography. While I'll be the first to admit that Zeiss makes a sharper 35 mm lens and even my tiny CV 35/2.5 is a touch sharper (or possibly more contrasty) lens. I really don't care. They both fall a little short in the image soul department.

I love the size, balance and, most of all, the way the 35 Summicron IV renders a photograph. I think it is the best lens to put on a M9.

WOW!

The lens has just arrived. Feels so much tighter and smoother in every way. Overall though the magic is there!

These pictures are all pretty crappy in subject, but focus is held now at f2. I can recompose with confidence, I imagine the loose element found was angled and therefore anything off centre would have been WAAAAAAAY off. Like apply a tilt in a view camera.

Anyway. Thanks to all the contributors to the thread. Sorry if I seemed off at any point. As I say when you buy something with a CLA bill included.. you expect well.. it to have been done!

Yes the corners are not Zeiss Biogon C sharp, but they hold the detail even in the halos. Which is what I expected. The shot at infinity is through double glazing and even then on the centre of frame the lovely rainbow moire is there on the stadium lights in the RAW, so she's outresolving the sensor :D

So I'd better start getting the biogon and the 40mm for sale now. 1 month on the plan is finally coming together (to quote a certain show)

I'll pop the full res links under each image too.
