I read a thread that described the 35/1.4 pre-ASPH as being a very difficult lens to assemble, and the quality and image issues were severe. So, I stopped looking for the 35/14. pre-ASPH.

Look through the 'net - the article wasn't hard to find.

It is comparing apples and oranges ... I have and like the 35mm Summilux-M pre-ASPH despite it`s flaws (low contrast at f/1.4, close-focus only 1m, awkward series VII filter to be used with original hood, very prone to flare). The 35/2.0 ASPH I have never tried (but the 35/2.0 pre-ASPH vs 4) and don`t feel the need to do so. 🙂

I've only used the pre-ASPH 'Lux and I love it. I just don't particularly like the aperture control. Used a 'Cron for the first time this weekend and sort of fell in love all over again...

Without sufficient funds/justification for owning both, I must decide.

As Gabor says two different animals. Depends on what you're after in a lens, the pre-ASPH Summilux gives that older Leica look, the ASPH Summicron delivers the modern one.

I echo Gabor's and sepiareverb's opinion.... 2 very different lenses.

Depends on whether you yearn for the past or look for the future....

I use a pre-ASPH second version 35/1.4 and a Summicron first version 35/2. Both are amazingly good lenses. I live in the past too. The 75/1.4 Lux takes me to the future.

ditto, I am re-discoverig this great lens, not because it is easy, but because it is hard... I nearly sold it on at one point, but am sooo glad I didn't...😡

I've found them very similar from f2 to f8, both have little to no distortion, little to no focus shift, good sharpness, medium contrast, bokeh to die for, and excellent build quality.

The asph cron can have some aperture reflection flare in or towards the sun. The pre-asphs flare is mostly at 1.4 and is the veiling type, or the crescent if shot at night and with light at certain angles.

I have the 28 Elmarit ASPH for when I want state of the art glass but I picked up the pre-ASPH 35 Lux because I wanted the "Leica Look". Now the 35 pre-ASPH practically lives on my camera. My vote is the pre-ASPH...
