Hi Simon.
I do not really know what to think about this lens yet. It is something there that really makes a big impact in some pictures I do not want to be without. More practice with it will make me make the most of it.
And your last pic; looks like an unidentified flying object is coming by. Maybe you have the first version?

I have had this(flare) in a few images once awhile from my late v.2. I don't think this is only exclusive for the first version.
I have to said that in Simon's last image, the flare is pretty extreme compare to what I had.

Well, I should stress that is is the worst flare-afflicted photo I have taken with the 35 pre-asph lux (the lens that has quickly become one of my favorites!). And the lighting condition was pretty extreme, with several strong light sources in a pretty dim environment. As I purchased this lens not so long ago, these days I tend to test its limits in different lighting conditions.

As is mentioned in most every 35 pre asph thread, there are bad ones, and there are good ones. Bad ones almost always give veiling flare wide open, good ones don't.
Bad ones always give that circular thing in some kinds of light, good ones don't.
It's tempting to think the latest ones fix everything, but that is probably not the case. I'd say, if it has any flare issues that a Cron doesn't, it could probably use a trip for a clean, and maybe even a trip to Solms...

wow Helen, the last two images are totally amazing!: not only the overall tonal rendition, but especially how the highlights pop out on the care inthe parade, and then the mild glow on the right in "meat"

I just got my 35 this week and have only run one roll through the M6TTL + 35/1.4 — my only camera and lens right now.
I'm looking forward to exploring all the lens's characteristics.
