Anyone have experience with both ?
I miss the softish focus ghosty DOF I get with my planar 85 on the 5D when using my RF.
The summilux is likely out of my budget but maybe the canon will work out. Is it usable open? Is the Oof area swirly and messed up? Should I hold out for the Lux? I'm not one to go through a lot of lenses anymore. Hoping to make a purchase that can stay with me like my other lenses will.

This look is missing

I recommend to wait for the 75/1.4. There really is no substitute, close focus, speed, resolution, bokeh - with all aspects.

Roland.

I have a Canon 85mm F1.5 and I will not be selling it. I have posted photos with it here, wide-open, and comments were made that it was a "sharp lens". I particularly like the bokeh it produces. Works just great on M5.

Thanks for all the responses.

@ JSU
I have the Canon 1.2 and it's great. Mine is a frankenlens made from 2 copies. Really lucky in that it's quite sharp but does glow quite a bit. Sometimes quite nicely. The 2 samples I posted are with a Zeiss Pancolar 1.8/80mm at WO. What I'm hoping for is the look I'm getting there with an RF Lens so I may shoot my M8 and film in the ZI for Portrait sets. A lens that gives me close to a full body DOF at mid to longer DOF is what I'm looking for. A 50mm seems to need to be f4 to get there which makes most fast 50's too sharp in oof areas. I think I'll try the 100mm f2 Canon although it's quite a beast of a lens from what I've read. It's worth a shot before forking out for the Lux 75. I put a for trade offer out for my M6 50mm DR kit for an M8 but then bought another M8 last week. Maybe I'll change the trade for a Lux75 unless I find a canon 2/100. So many nice reflex lenses to do this sort of work and cheap too. The focus accuracy is a sh!t issue though with a reflex and fast mid teles. Really hoping for an RF solution. Keeps the kit smaller also 😉

Nice ferider and ampguy!

f16 - which canon lens are you using on the 5D? I love the 85/1.2, but am just as happy with the 75 on the RF.

Here are a couple from Saturday with the 75 lux:

one with people in the background at different distances. I was just a tad too close to frame this with the 75:

You didn't ask for it, but did you consider the pre ASPH 90 Cron?
It is much lighter, more compact, much more affordable than the 75 Lux.

Another lens to consider is the Canon 85mm f/1.8.

I owned it before the 75mm Summilux, and they give a similar in look. The canon 85/1.8 is really a great lens.

I only sold the Canon because I could afford the Summilux, and I prefer the ergonomics of the 'lux over the canon.

I have both and would not part with either. The Canon has a more vintage look, a little softer wide open, but still wonderful. Here's a shot with it I like.

I agree with Charlie, but if I had to keep just one of these two lenses, it would be definitely the Summilux 75/1.4. I have both lenses too. For me, focusing is much easier with the Lux than with the Canon lens.

I once did a comparison project for tele lenses.
Until you get microscopic in comparing images, almost all used tele lenses were excellent.

In my own photography, I also prefer the old Zeiss 85/1.4 Planar for the QBM Rolleiflex mount 35mm cameras, and the Canon 85mm/1.2L FD. The old style Summicron 90/2 is also sent to us from Zeiss Heaven ....
