I have a version 2 pre asph 50 summilux that at 1m appears to front focus by approx 3cm. Is this normal and if not can it be easily corrected? thx all

How do your other lenses focus? If it is just the one lens that is off, you could ask Wil van Manen to adjust it. Are you sure it is not focus shift? I.e wide open it is spot on and as you close the aperture the focus shifts. That is normal for this lens.

Jaapv, thx for the reply. My 35 asph is perfect and the collapsable Elmar is too but then the dof with these at f2 and 2.8 respectively is greater than the 1.4 of the lux. Cameras, M6 and MP are spot on as well, Will's checked both. I've just done another test at 1m at 1.4, 2, 2.8 and 4 and will get the results back this week. This has been the first M lens i've noticed that has been a bit hit and miss at close range ie 1m. It definately focuses forward by 2-3 cm's and wondered if anyone has accurately tested theirs with film.
If this latest test confirms my earlier findings I will take it over to Will and see if he can sort it.

3cm gets close to the camera's accuracy. According to Zeiss, for instance,
3cm is the build tolerance of a ZI's RF. A Leica M should be able to be accurate down to half cm or so.

Make sure that you test with tripod, cable release and magnifier, and using the center area of the patch to focus. From my own experience, it is very easy to introduce shift via body back-lash.

If you have an older long-throw lens, test the cameras rangefinder against
a tape measure. I use a Nikkor 50/1.4 for this. It is more likely the camera's fault
than the lens.

It depends on which 2nd version you refer. If it's the E46 that focuses to 0.7 m, check infinity focus. I briefly owned one and it focused slightly past infinity which partly contributes to front focusing as well. The most important thing to check is that the camera's calbration is accurate at one meter as well as infinity. There is a separate adjustment on the camera to adjust this and can lead to focus error if not corrrect.
