Summilux, Summirat, Summicron...

I've been looking around here now for a couple of weeks and haven't been able to find a 'definition' if you will for the names in the title of this thread.
Can someone enlighten me or point me in the right direction please?
Are they just 'model' designations for different lenses or ????

Summilux lenses are all f1.4, Summicrons are all f2.0. Summarits nowadays are, I think f2.5?

Yes, and as for Summirat, that's the mountain a little downhill from Ararat. It was submerged the day that Noah's Ark made landfall.

I think Summitars were the precursors to Summicrons, which were first produced in the very early '50s.

Hi,

They replaced the Summar in 1939 and were f/2. Last made 1955 and screw mount and collapsible only. Almost but not quite a Summicron; although the pre-production Summicrons were tested and labelled as a "Summitar *".

The first Summarits (1950s) were 1.5, right? And the Summarons were always 35mm focal length, though 3.5 or 2.8, if memory serves.

Well there are Elmars (3.5 and 4.0) and Elmarits, 2.8, and Hecktors (sp?) and probably more...

No, they are more like families than progressions.

As others have said, the info is out there and easy to find. Or buy a book. Look for 'Identifying Leica Lenses' by Ghester Sartorius ISBN 88-900059-8-X.

It is as good a starting point as any.

Except for the latest Leica addition of the Summarits in form of their medium format lenses with maximum aperture of ƒ2.5.
Those come in more costly, bigger, heavier + with autofocus and weather sealing, some even with leaf sutter (do they ship already? … ducking).

In the beginning it all is very cryptic, but soon enough it all makes sense … careful, addictive!
