I recently acquired a Leica Leitz Summitar 50 mm f 2.0, which is cosmetically very good. However the aperture ring and focus are stiff, but usable. The Lens also has some light haze. Does anyone have advice on the best place to have this lens serviced, i contacted Leica but they say they can no longer undertake work on this Lens.

Thanks Anths

Hi thanks I have seen the page, I do my own repairs but I wont touch leica lenses as I have too much respect for them and would feel happier if a person with experience of this lens did the work.

Thanks Anthony

There are quite a few places to get it done in the UK. In London you’ll pay through the nose. I have found that Peter from CRR Luton is very good with Leica. He did a complete CLA involving a lot of work on my Canon 35mm f2 LTM lens for less than £100. Unfortunately his wife passed away last a Christmas and he has had some time away. By the looks of his website he might be taking on work now though. Malcolm Taylor is also great but expensive. I also recommend Camserve. They are priced competitively and do all the servicing and repair work for Ffordes Photographic. They did a great job on an M4-P I bought from them. Good luck.

Thanks for that information i will have a look into those options. I was told to try Leicashop.com in Germany but I don't know anything about them ?..

Over the years Malcolm Taylor has done two Summitar's for me.
Both had the similar symptoms to yours and both came back pristine.
It's still my go to lens

Malcolm Taylor gets all my lenses, most recently a Summitar. He recoated the lenses and recemented the front doublet. It's as good as new now. Reasonable price too, but he might not want to start on your lens until spring when it's warmer so less chance of condensation affecting his work.

Give Red Dot Cameras a call. They are near the British museum.

There is also CRR Luton, bedfordshire 7790627778

I highly advise against servicing the lens yourself, unless you own an optical bench for calibration and have access to the proper lubricants that won’t migrate in hot weather and seep into the glass.

Yes, it will not be cheap to have it properly seviced, but it’s a vintage piece. They aren’t making these anymore and if you really want one then a CLA is sort of part of the purchase price.

Thank's for your replies I think I may give Mr Taylor a look up as he seems popular among users on the forum and others I have spoken too.

Thanks for your efforts Anthony
