Summitar hood and Minolta CLE, options?

Hi all,

Looking for an usable and efficient hood option for Summitar when mounted on the CLE.

Summitar needs a good hood but since it could easily interfere with the rangefinder window, which is above the lens, I wonder what do you use for it...

I currently use a 42mm cilindrical clamp-on hood (Sankyo branded) but I would need a more efficient hood.

Clamp-on, push-in or slip-on preferred (screw-in avoided if possible)
I use a Summitar to 39mm filter adapter on it, but as I said I'd prefer a non-screw-in hood.

I use a screw-on hood with a Summitar to LTM adapter that I picked up from Heavystar for not much $$$. Works well on my IIIc and M-mount bodies, but I don't have a CLE so I can't say whether that hood would interfere w/ the RF window.

That said, I often shoot my coated Summitar without a hood. It's a very clean sample and does not flare nearly as much as the lens's reputation would have it.

I know that Sankyo 42mm clamp-on hood. Very good one, very well made with felt inside.

If you look at how a hood works, you'll find that a cylindrical one doesn't need to be very long to be very efficient. Larger hoods will be longer than your Sankyo one but they will block the camera viewfinder and RF. Plus, they won't be more efficient unless you get the original "barndoor" Leitz hood. But the minor gain you'll get for protecting the front element against oblique light rays will be paid with a very large and very ugly hood.

I'd keep the Sankyo and wouldn't worry about something else.

Minolta used to make a similar hood, named the DK-42. It ain't better at the end of the day.

Yes, the Minolta hood is very similar to the Sankyo. A bit wider and a hair shorter from the pictures I've seen.
The Sankyo can be used on the Jupiter-8 too. And I use it on my ltm Summaron f3.5 on APS-C (not checked yet on film)
I don't like screw-in hoods, less if using a filter, so I try to find a non-screwing solution first when I can.
My Summitar is very clean, no haze, but I can see the increase in contrast when shaded properly.

I'd like to try other cheap slip-on hoods like the rectangular plastic one for the Jupiter-8...
but that's why I'm asking, since the RF window it's easily blocked by a hood...
and although I have the time to look for hoods I can't expend more money trying several hoods until I find the right one,
so I wondered what you are using when mounting the great Summitar on the CLE...



Anyhow, any first hand experiences with the CLE + Summitar + hoods are very very welcome.

Maybe someone is using the old cubic Canon 42mm/series VI hood? It was made for the 50/1.9 and the 35/3.5
Looks efficient for Summitar but, does it block the CLE's rangefinder window?

Or the 42mm FSU pyramidal hood for Industar-61, Jupiter-8 et al? (3rd att. image)

Do they vignette?
Do they block the rangefinder window?
Do they intrude on the viewfinder too much?

If it will cheer you up the Summitar and Summitar hood I use on the IIIc don't work together. The groove for the hood is 'v' shaped and the bits that go in it and hold it on are square in section. So they are a mismatch...

On day I'll find a nice Chinese made vented hood with straight (not tapered) sides and stick it in a lathe and turn it down to 42mm and cut little bendable tabs in it; one day that is...

But first I have to find a suitable hood.

I think there are two versions of the barn-door hood... maybe one has the right grooves...

Your idea could be realized lathe-less by using a 42mm to series VI adapter + hood. In fact there are many series VI hoods around with the 42mm attached (and you can use filters between adapter and hood usually!) The Canon I described and many others are like that.
I mount my Sankyo hood on the outside of Summitar's front, so anything 42mm clamp-on is fine.

Simple (non series VI) clamp-on hoods for 42mm diam. like the Sankyo are the Minolta D42, Canon S42, and many others.
UK ePay seller "old_cam" has many slip-on and clamp-on hoods. Not cheap, but very cool looking.

My comment about the lathe was wrong, it's 41.5mm and so even those nice FED rectangular ones won't fit without a bit of padding. A pity as they fit otherwise and the RF works OK with them in place but checked on the IIIc so not much use to you.

a bit of camera tape inside the hood; three 1cm strips, two or three layers each and voila! 😀
Good real cloth camera tape (TESA for instance) will not let goo residues on the hood.


I have a great conical plastic hood for Industar-50-2 (M42 lens, 37mm ring around the front element) usually sold as if it was made for Industar-22 (A36)
It happens to be 37mm instead of 36mm. But a bit of tape in it and it fits Elmar, Summaron, Industar-22... For a KOMZ (Kazan) Industar-22 is a perfect match without the tape since it has a slightly larger diameter (36.5?)
That's what I do and it fits Industar-22 KMZ and Elmar 50 fine.
It fits Summaron 35/3.5 too but I guess it would vignette (untested)

Those FSU plastic slip-on hoods (A36 or 42mm) are great imho; light, simple and cheap. And won't scratch the lens.

I think I've a box of the rectangular hoods, somewhere. Trouble is, we had a radiator fail; a room flooded and emptied in a hurry (12 hours work) and since then I can't find anything...

OTOH, I keep finding cameras I'd forgotten.

Just a thought...isn't it dangerous to collapse a Summitar on a Cl or CLE? Doesn't it foul the meter?

Or am I thinking about something else....

The CL has the meter on a retractable arm so it is not advisable.
On the CLE it depends on the lens.

I don't collapse the Summitar on my CLE just in case. Much larger mass than an Elmar or an Industar-22.
The best is to check with the back of the camera open and decide what to do.


-edit: finished current roll on the CLE and checked clearance with the Summitar: if you collapse it you won't damage the camera but if done many times you will erode a couple of rubber pads at the sides of the meter. Those pads are there as a cushion I guess, but are thin and I prefer not to test their resistance to wear... So I won't collapse it on the CLE.

No, I didn't. Trying to find something as efficient but smaller and lighter.
And if possible usable with other lenses (hence the snap-on and clamp-on options)

Not trying to push you in this direction, but the barndoor is basically invisible from the finder, is clamp-on, doesn't cover the RF patch, and came in two versions, one also usable on the collapsible and rigid Summicron.

I think you'll find it's designed for the screw-mount Leicas (iiic-g) and has plenty of clearance over the lens. Should work.

I use my Summitar just with an accessory lens (on a screw mount Leica) and when I think of it a push-on lens hood.

The sizing is a little odd, so don't expect a finder that fits it to correctly fit another lens.
