Summitar hood?

Can anyone tell me the proper hood for a Summitar?

When I had an IROOA I used that, but that's gone with the coll. Summicron that it was meant for so it's back to the barndoor hood.

If you have a look at the Leica IIIa currently listed for sale by Michael Harris you'll get an idea of what the Summitar hood looks like - when folded flat! Ugly thing!

Many dislike the Summitar hood, thinking it ugly. I love mine. Since I did stage and theatrical photography in Hollywood years ago, I am used to barn doors on my tungsten lights. Having barn doors on my Leica Summitar hood was a nice touch for me. It folds up neatly. With my IIIF and Summitar, plus this hood, I decided to get a slim, light wood tripod like the Ries Tripod I used to use. With a cable release and this combination, I feel like I have a miniature view camera. However, If I had to carry the camera and shoot hand held, I think I would get an alternative hood.

This hood was designed for this lens and gives proper shading. It also has a window cut out of it so you can properly see the rangefinder and viewfinder images.

I think I may pursue some of the alternatives to the barn door. It looks and apparently is....quite ungainly, although functional in a static environment.

I found the SOOPD no bother with a Summitar, and I find the SOOFM no bother with a collapsible Summicron.

Some Summitars have a v grove, some a flat. You need the proper shade to fit the grove.

A ser 6 push -on will sometimes work. Then add a ser 6 shade on the ser 6 push on.

It's almost impossible to find the v groove model. I've been looking for one for years. You need that one for the early pre hex iris Summitars (war time to 1950ish). Best bet is a Series VI Canon, it's small and vented, and fits just fine with a single layer of electrician's tape on the inside if you are afraid of scratching up your Summitar. The Canon looks like it was made for it.

I use a Leitz IROOA, on my Summitar: fit and work perfectly.

There's actually three varieties of the SOOPD, the earliest is screw-clamp, the next is for the V-groove, the last (and most common) is for the square-bottom groove. Depends on which lens you have. Mine's wartime, so I have a screw-clamp one.

The screw clamp SOOPD will fit any Summitar.
