Summitar performance

Wow.....I have a Summitar that I have only used on film......no clue it could perform like that on a digi.

Thanks

Yup. a very character driven lens. I just love my Nokton, that I recently sold my Summitar. I just didn't use it that much.

ive had my summitar 50/1.5 almost a year now, and i am trying very hard to appreciate it in the way you describe. it does take some getting used to, and 50mm is not a favored FL for me, so its not on a cam a heck of a lot. but i just received a 25mm cv snapshot skopar, so i'm revved up to fire a few rolls with my rollei rf, and that means taking the summi along for shots that need something faster than f4.0! a couple months ago i had it on my ep2 and really took some lovely shots as i wondered among some flamingo at a florida sanctuary. perhaps the lens just needs the right environment, and perhaps i need to use it more to learn it's subtle ways. very nice review.

btw, as a recent x100 owner i note your thought that it 'blows the m9 out of the water for high iso'. its so funny to me because i keep hearing the argument that the x100 is overpriced for a fixed FL single lens camera. given the phenomial IQ at all iso's, i am growing quite tired of that point of view, so i wanted to thank you for such refreshing candor in this regard. my goodness, if it can even EQUAL in ANY way, let alone beat out, a cam that costs 5x's as much, maybe the overpriced theory will finally go the way of the whooping crane!

The 50mm F1.5 is a SUMMARIT; a different lens from the one reviewed.

sorry! not the first time i've misread summitar for summarit. maybe because they're anagrams, maybe i just need to pay closer attention. however, i do believe your major proposition, that quality but inferior lenses can be valued for their individual character, does indeed apply to the summarit as well. it certainly is a well made, but by modern standards inferior lens that does possess a certain character. perhaps from your perspective it's good to know that you can positively effect those beyond your target audience.
