Sunpak auto 20

I'm not familiar with this exact model. I have an "auto 133" that I occasionally use. Disregard the last comment if your unit is a handle mount type.
It'll probably work BUT- it probably won't cover wider than a 35mm or 28mm perspective, and you'll have to get a hot shoe adapter with a synch cord if the flash unit hasn't got one. Of course there's no place for both a viewfinder and a flashgun on the camera, so you'll be shooting "blind" unless you can find a way to mount both.

With a double accessory shoe, which you can buy from cameraquest.com, you could mount both the flash and a viewfinder. One problem with this accessory: it turns your hot shoe into a cold shoe; you must now use a synch cord to fire the strobe.

I don't remember if the Bessa L had a PC connection, does it?

Not only does the Bessa L have a PC synch, it also has no hot shoe. Flash sych is via PC cord only.
Also, Cameraquest's double accessory shoe isn't wide enough to put the viewfinder next to most flashguns. The two shoes are just too close together.
