Super Angulon 21mm f4 hood - necessary?

I have just got hold of an SA 21/4, but without the hood.

Does anyone have experience of this lens with and without the hood? The angle of the hood is so wide that it’s hard to see how much protection it could provide the lens from stray rays.

I’m interested to hear any first hand experience...

It will make some difference for stray light entering from around the edges, but the protection from accidental damage is probably at least as important. Besides, that hood looks very cool. 🙂
