Hi guys,
I'm a novice in shooting color film but I'm starting to like it.

I shot some Kodak Gold 200, the colors it produced were a bit dull to my taste, but the skin tone it rendered was good. Even when I shot at home with artificial light, balancing the skin tone was easy.

I now shot a roll of Superia 100 - the overall colors were excellent (to my taste) and skin tone, shot with sunlight was good. However, when I shot portraits in the shade, the skin tone tended to be pink and even red.

I must say that my reference is minilab automatic scan. I have a scanner at home but I'm very inexperienced with color balancing so I prefer the automatic scan (at least for the time being).

Did any of you see this effect? Is it because of the film or because of the scanning?
Does Kodak Gold 200 behave better in these situations?

PS - I'm going abroad tomorrow and already bought some Superia 200, I hope I made the right choice....

For facial colors I'd stick with either Superia Reala or 400h (or 160S/C, but Reala 135 for me is nice enough), depending on light. Can not say about Kodak's stuff, but believe that Portra range would offer similar flexibility.

Otherwise I prefer Superia200 over plain Superia100, more pleasing tones -but see how it works for you.

And...you can't judge film (and print film especially) from automatic scans unless it's only and consistent way you will see results. If you will stick with this lab and look of scans don't float from roll to roll, then you can decide if this is what you want.

Thanks!

BTW, do you have examples of portraits shot in the shade with Superia 200?
From what I saw in flickr, the skin tones produced by Superia 200 are OK, and not like the ones I saw with Superia 100.

Do you think I'm taking a risk using Superia 200 as a "general purpose color film" for daylight?

I know I should answer this question from my own experience but I'm going abroad tomorrow, going to shoot color and doens't have much experience with it...

Actually I'm new to Superia200, and have shot Superia100 years ago couple of rolls with both), so my thoughts aren't cut in stone. I've used much more Superia Reala and NPH/400H and would take them to trip any time. Recently got lot of Superia200 to use in GASed cameras so will see 🙂

As general purpose film superia200 should work just fine, especially if you can get it for cheap and it will be processed everywhere.
Have a nice trip and good pics !

Superia or Reala?

Superia or Reala?

I've used a lot of Superia 200 as a general purpose colour negative film and found the level of saturation and colour rendition to be very good. Now moving on to use the 400 new version.
I've also used Reala 100 as a specialist portrait film, especially for the skin tones. Results excellent, also good for general purpose work, but not always as easy to come by as Superia and usually just a little more expensive.
