The following might be of interest to the few RFF members who are working on long term photo projects and intend to publish their work in book form.
An interesting model for photo book publishing from Robert Ketchum:

In all seriousness, does anyone else find it disturbing and progressive that a photojournalist of Mr. Towell's stature has to resort to kickstarter.com to raise funding for a project because other venues have dried up?

I find it a bit disturbing that you quote yourself in a thread with only posts by yourself.
As for Larry Towell and kickstarter, good for him. Photojournalism these days has to look for new ways of funding as the traditional models aren't reliable anymore.
But I didn't want to interrupt the conversation...

That was an accident - wanted to EDIT the post but hit QUOTE instead. Just wanted to add the ;P to the end of it.
I'll go back to talking to myself.

No I don't, frankly I think he's taking a great approach for the state of the world right now. As journalism rebuilds itself in what ever model will work he has found a life line that is perfect. I would much rather give small amounts of money at targeted interesting efforts of all sorts than to the United Way. I gave to Wikipedia the other day, $10 was more than I can afford right now but I think it's a good cause. Once I get employed again I will give $10 or $20 to Mr. Towell effort.
Oh and by the way Jamie123 does not speak for all of us. Navigating around here sometimes can be, well a pain, though better than most other sites I've been to. Keep sharing with us, it's good stuff!
This is a great post and I will try to give it a bump from time to time over the weekend. Hoping it will grab some life and more eyes will see it. This sort of post is what often makes RFF great. This is the first time I've seen it not grab some traction for the better.
Again thanks for the post.

Thanks for posting this. I am a HUGE fan of Mr. Towell. For my money there are no living photographers better at combining photojournalism and --- dare I say it? Art.

I was touched by the video commentary. I've also been touched by Larry's previous work and his lifestyle as well. Go Larry.

I find it very disturbing that Larry Towell (as well as many other very established photographers) has to resort to Kickstarter. The reason is that I was going to start a project on there but Larry is one tough act to follow! But in all seriousness, I hope he reaches his goal.

Larry is known for taking unconventional measures to attain funding... In the documentary film "Magnum in Motion", he is quoted as saying that he prefers to do projects on a shoe-string budget and then sell the work afterwards to recover costs. Larry has also rejected traditional funding offers and elected to do it his own way instead because he "does not like working with a monkey on his back". This is why he uses kickstarter.
