Finally, it arrived! (Thanks, Frank!)

My first Canonet!

It's so small, but not flimsy. Has a rather solid feel to it - feels surprisingly well made. Doesn't feel anything like your run of the mill P&S camera, although the size is similar to a P&S...
Funny, at first I thought it looks just like my Yashica Lynx 14e - only about half the size :)
Everything is where it's supposed to be - no strange placement of controls, no surprises. It just feels natural in the hand.
And the famous "QL" (quick load) feature is a real blessing after Leica Ms :D Say what you will, but on Canonet they did it better!
RF/VF is not that great - my Yashica is better (not to mention the Leicas, but that's another league....) Still, RF is quite usable - much better than anything you'll find on any Russian RF.
I love this little camera! I shot a test roll immediately, and, although I made some errors in developing (i.e. used a wrong fixer :(), most of the shots came out nicely. The others were mainly due to operator errors ;)
In short, if I were asked to provide a concise description, I'd say that it's a miniature Leica. A bit of an overstatement, perhaps, but that's my impression. In several regards it's better than an M2 or M3 - e.g. it has a built-in light meter, and also auto-exposure. Small and solid, it's a camera you'd want with you at all times. No wonder it was nicknamed a "poor man's Leica" :)
Strange, after so many cameras, it's only now that I got a Canonet. And indeed, all the praises I've been reading are not hype. It's a solid, well-built little camera, very practical, and the final results look very good so far, almost comparable to my Yashica Lynx. And the 1.7 max. aperture is also a nice bonus if you prefer to shoot in available light.

Attached is something in the Peter style, although the shot was not taken in a public toilet :D

I LOVE THIS CAMERA!!!!!

And another one...

And another one...

also a bit sharper and better exposed than the previous one :)

Okay Denis, after reading your analysis of this camera, I'd like it back, please! (wink) I'm glad you like it.

very nice, a great carry every/any where kind of camera.

i keep an oly 35 rc in my work bag all the time, can never tell...

Sorry, Frank - you'll have to do with your new Bessa!
I like the Canonet too much!

Denis, are Canonets hard to find in Croatia? I just put in new
seals in my $1.00 Canonet and hope to shoot it this weekend.
I had to remove the covers to tighten the lens so I need to
get new leather for it. I have found as many as 4 Canonets
in a week here. I found another GIII this week. I really want
to get a Konica Auto S1.6 or S2 as I hear they have good lenses.
Enjoy you "new" mini Leica.

Denis, that first pic. Is that your darkroom? ;)

Mine is about half that size. Wet and dry areas are seperated by a big fat towel....

Rob, Canonets are not easy to find here. They do pop up every once in a while, but not that often.
I've seen one about a month ago, just after I bought mine from Frank :)

David, it's my bathroom. My darkroom is much smaller... So small that I have to use a fisheye to show it. :D

Pic attached:

Another shot from the Canonet. Fuji Superia 200, lousy scan from the lab. :(

Colors are a bit off, since it was under tungsten light (or halogen?, I don't remember), but the original shows that it's quite a capable little camera....

Denis, I am not surprised that you like it, for all the reason that you state. I have the same camera, a black GIII QL, and its one camera I'll never sell. In fact, I think I sunk about $300 into it to keep it in top shape.

Either the GIII QL is in my briefcase, or its the R3a with a couple lenses. All depends on my mood, and if I think I'll need the 21mm or 75mm lens. But one or the other is always there.

Enjoy the camera!! I know I do :)

BTW, I like that second image. Nice feel to it, and good expression!

Great to see the GIII QL it´s a queen in it´s category.
Shure it´s in my future list.
Please add more pictures.

I took my Canonet (w/ new PX-675 battery) to a party and got some nice images in the low light w/ the D flash. I had a lot easier time shooting in these conditions than folks with digital P&S cameras - even with the dodgy focusing patch on this old timer.

I'm new here, so am curious to see if my attached image will display....

doesn't look like it.

hit the post reply button, at the bottom of the messege area look for 'attach file', you can attach a pic from your hard drive.

My (color) shots with Canolite D dedicated flash came out with a strong blue cast. Either the lab botched the processing, or the old flash has developed some kind of defect, due to aging or something. However, the exposures were OK.
Here's an example:

As for the battery, I am using a Varta 625 (1.5V) - and after checking against a good meter, I find the Canonet meter is off - particularly in strong light. In low light levels it is more or less OK, but in strong light the aperture shown is larger than it should be - e.g. my good meter shows 1/125, f16, and the Canonet goes only to 1/125, f8 or a bit more... A full stop and a half error (overexposure)....

The measurements with 1.4V hearing aid battery were not much better.

Looks like soon I'll finally be making some battery adapters, as per that PDF floating around the Net - the one with a Schottky diode....

Well, it's another winter project - hopefully, it will be as good as my DIY shutter speed tester :)

You could always adjust the ISO up or down to correct for general exposure discrepancy. With print film I find a bit of overexposure is desirable for bringing up shadow details anyway.

JP, the problem is that the battery/voltage error is not consistent throughout the metering range. In lower light the meter is more or less OK, but in bright light there's about 1 and a half stop error.

I think the correct voltage should work as intended.
And then there's the stuff about ordinary (alkaline) batteries losing the voltage over all their life cycle - i.e. they start at about 1.5 or more, and continuously drop, ending somewhere below 1V. The result is that in such situation, alkalines are actually never "correct".
That's why all adapter solutions (using a diode to reduce output) suggest the use of silver oxide batteries.

Anyway, as I said, Canonet is usable as it is for B&W work, but I'm rather picky about that stuff, and won't rest until I've solved this :)

I am using the "Wein" zinc-air batt's in my QL-17 and Oly RC. They are the proper voltage, and last considerably longer than the hearing aid zinc-air's. Don't use the alkalines. Go with silver oxide's, if you don't want to use the "Weins".
