Australia/New Zealand Sydney Australia RFF Meet Up

Thanks guys for the enjoyable company - sorry I couldn't stay longer! Nice to meet you Jon, Mike, and Ong. Here's some quick and dirty scans from the XA/HP5+ in XTOL on the V700 with unflattened negs (can't guarantee they'll be any better when flattened LOL). Sorry Ong, these were taken before you arrived.

Paolo, I'm like you in that I'm not one for going around in a gang of streettogs (as E Kim likes to say) but I just tag along for the yarning and have my camera out at the same time. It's good fun when you've got at least some things in common.

Yes, it was pretty low key as we managed to find our way down to The Rocks, each person pausing to do what ever they wanted or in Mike and Peter's case, have a smoke :) Mostly chatting and surprisingly not only about cameras. I know politics got a fair run!

I manged to take a roll of 120 by the time we arrived but I wouldn't call it a photo walk' by any stretch.

So it wasn't a "dslr workshop"? Phew! Occassionally I see a group of them with their gorilla-pods and back packs, squinting at their screens taking photos of the opera house and bridge.

I'll often park over the bridge at Kirribilli because I drive in from the suburbs and then walk across the bridge, then I fossick around the city as far as my feet will take me. Mostly around dusk and into the evening. Good time of year for outings but with today's heat I wouldn't blame you guys for bailing into a pub for aircon and cold beer.

BTW: Nice shots Lynn. That's some quick turnaround to dev and scan.

It was a great day.

We managed to find our way to the QVB:

Examine some equipment:

Advise passers by on what to do with the family M5:

Chat and watch the world go by (in my case I had to watch it reflected):

After Lynn took his leave:

We went for a wander around Sydney:

We even ran across a couple of other rangefinder users along the way (including Andrew, who posted above).

...Mike

thanks Paolo. And nice shots Mike. It was good to get out and meet some other friendly faces who share this affliction :)

Wow, I am very impressed that the film shooters got images posted in this thread before the digital shooters. Great work! And thank you for a fun day everyone. It was great to finally meet some of the locals after quite a few years here at RFF seeing your photos and reading your posts.

sydney is a great city. lovely people everywhere.

These are beautiful images, and what I am seeing looks great. I better start saving for a trip to Australia!

I think I may have made a bad mistake coming to the meetup. Jon and John's R8 and Ikon ZM are playing up my GAS again :eek::eek:

Sorry to miss what looks like a fine gathering. My wife and i leave for Auckland on Feb 22, then a week later to Australia for four weeks (Peerth-Bridbane-Sydney-Melbourne)as we follow the 2015 Cricket World Cup (yes, I am a yank who like cricket!) and I'd love to meet up with some fellow RFFers during the trip. Anybody in Auckland Feb 24-March 1? We are staying at the Best Western in downtown Auckland….maybe we can meet up? Cheers, Bob

I think John's, Lynn's and Jon's photos capture very well the good humour and fun that we had, and Chris91387's photos show how good Sydney can look, which it does on most days. Next time all you guys who said you were sorry to miss it better come. Mcfingon and Raid and other interstate and overseas people especially welcome. Raid can surely find more shark attack material here, and add spider and snake attacks too.
As for Bobkonos coming for the cricket, well that's a gilt-edged invitation and a red carpet. Surely Bob and Mrs Konos are going to be the only spectators from their country except for English emigres and expatriates! Consider this post a heads-up for a meet-up in March/April. Bobkonos, keep us appraised of your schedule please.

Bob, I wish I was still here for your visit but I'll be back in Japan by then. I'm sure the guys in Sydney will take care of you though. Hopefully we'll see you in Japan again soon!

Bob, I see you'll be in Australia from the 1st or 2nd of March. Let us know your dates for the Sydney bit(s) when you can and we'll arrange something.
Hope the 1st day of the Cup was good to watch.
I'll send you a pm too for good measure.

Further to Bobkonos's visit to our sunny/rainy shores, Bob says March 16, 17 and 19 are his free days in Sydney. Lynnb has already mentioned to me that March 17 won't suit him, so that leaves Monday 16th or Thursday 19th (ideally). Being week days perhaps a late afternoon/early evening coffee or drink while the sun's still around, a walk maybe and then dinner? Of course if people are available earlier then we can make a day of it.
Partners welcome too for all phases or just dinner as they prefer. Bob and I will endeavour to inveigle ours to come for dinner at least.
So what about it? We can't let a cricket-loving American go unwelcomed. Post in with ideas and date preference. Don't be shy. Act now!

I'll try to make it this time. Thursday sounds ok but hard to say this far out. I just said Thursday because there seems to be a lot more activity in the city on a Thursday evening probably due to the extended shopping hours.

On a slippery side note - since the Sydney guys are on this thread. (Apologies in advance for being a little off topic)
I'm having trouble with my local suburban lab who still does film developing once a week. They just don't seem to do enough film any more and the c41 processing is starting to look like they did it in a dirty fish tank.
Any suggestions for a decent colour lab????

I haven't used Vision Graphics at St Leonards for a few years but they were good (also a bit pricey, from memory). I mainly used them for Velvia processing.

VisionImageLab at Redfern also have a good reputation, but I've never used them for processing.

I've had similar fish tank and greasy finger marks experiences with local camera store minilabs, as well as a disappointing experience with marked negs with the local Northern Beaches pro lab.

Paolo, it would be great if you came along. You're right about Thursday being a better bet than Monday.
Lynn, are you up for Thursday?
Re: C41 labs, everyone, including Vanbar and Mainline, recommends Vision Image in Redfern. I'm going to give them a try myself soon.
