sync covers: how to not lose them?

I've already lost 2 sync covers, probably from the camera swinging against me. They didn't seem very tight to begin with--has anyone found a way to keep them in there? I'd like to keep the dirt out and not keep paying $6/cover.

The easiest way not to lose them, is of course, not to use them. Other than esthetics, I don't find a reason to keep replacing them, so I just don't use 'em.

Stop worrying about it.

Why do you need 'em anyway? Have you ever had synch destroyed by dirt? I haven't. Bent contacts, yes. Dirt, no.

Well, the M4 style covers were single and a jillion years ago a bunch of us took note of the fact that Leicaflex covers came in pairs connected by a little strip of plastic. We all switched to Leicaflex covers for our M4 cameras. I started burning little holes through the center of my M3/M2 caps and using a little piece of braided fishing line to connect them. Then I got sensible! It doesn't matter about dirt if you don't use flash, and if you do use flash all you need to do is turn the cord's connector a few times after inserting it and you should get good contact. Nobody seems to worry about dirt in the flash sockets of Rolleis, Nikons, Canons, etc. Why should we get all bent out of shape?

Glue? I've only ever used them on one Nikon body I shot in the studio, wouldn't miss the port if it wasn;t there myself.

If, by any chance they come with a camera, I remove them and put them in an empty film container. When it is full, I give them to some collector who likes to use them on display cameras. The older M2/M3/M4 mushroom shaped ones pops off almost instantly as they catch the zipper of a jacket or vest. Never had a problem with synch contacts and dirt, but as someone said, bent wires frequently ( at least in the days when i used flash!).

I just miss them when they are not there. I simply love those two little white boobs on the back of my M3's and M2's.
