well, on the firtst, coalmine shot, there are no highlights, so it's easy to see why they are not blown out🙂) The second scene is much more contrasty. Fast bw films seem not to like contrasty scenes too much.

The histogram looks "good" so I am guess you are right Pherdi, perhaps the film just couldn't hold the highlights.
