Here's a thread to share knowledge and minimise postprocessing.
Please share your way of tackling dust.

I start by vacuuming my desk before i start scanning.
Wear gloves for fingerprints, use a rocket blower to blow away dust on the scanner and a microfiber cloth to wipe the negatives.

And of course there is still specs on my scans, so please share your magic.

Does anyone have a vinyl static gun or static zapper?
Does suppose to help allot as well.

Thanks for sharing.

  1. I wear disposable cotton gloves,
  2. brush the negative strip with a Kinetronics Staticwisk Brush,
  3. load the negs into the holder,
  4. and then blow the holder with negs with a rocket blower. With the holder at an angle I start at with the top frame and work down. Two or three puffs for each frame.

It seems to work well for me. Others might find it insufficient. Or excessive. Or inefficient. For me it works and it's ritual.

Also - geography is probably important to mention. I'm in Sacramento, California. Humidity ranges from an average daily low between 30% and 65% with September the lowest, and an average daily high between 85% and 95% with January being the highest.

I'm using a flatbed and it sucks in all the dust it can get hold on. Im in the Netherlands, humidity ranges from from around 80% to 90% over the year.

I would love not to worry about it, but my scans are always full of specs of dust and it takes allot of time to clean them up. I'm working on a v700 and digital ICE is not that good so its photoshop most of the way.
