Out last night with the M2, Canon 50mm f/1.2 wide open, and Neopan 1600.

One amusing moment...a young guy stopped me and said, "Hey, is that that Panasonic that looks like a Leica?" Meaning, I assume, the L1. "No, it's an M2!" I said. "Whoooaaaa, man, that's the way it's done!" I have to admit I was proud as hell to be shooting an all manual camera after dark without a meter. Live dangerously!!!!

The portrait is my friend Jim, quite a good abstract photographer.

Neopan is great. In D76 it has a really crazy grain, like popcorn or something. Or maybe that's Neopan 400. Anyway, I like it.

Neopan grain in D76 is actually very good ... check out Alkis' Neopan shots on flickr. PeterC posted a Neopan shot in Rodinal 1:25 (!) that was astounding. Neopan has remarkably good grain for a 1600 speed film. It is APX 400 that seems to have overly stated grain. 😉

I haven't tried Neopan in XTol, but it's something I will probably do.

These were souped in Rodinal 1:50 for 8 minutes, scanned w/5000ED, then adjusted a bit in Lightroom.

The 50mm f1.2 is a magical lens for sure - the reason for buying it (as it is for buying any large aperture lens imho) is to shoot it at f1.2 as much as possible 😀 - I sometimes consider buying another one but then I think about the size and where/how I would use it.

Thanks guys; the 1600 does look good in Rodinal - I like it. I used to use it as my regular developer; my local B&M shop didn't carry it so I ended up with a (big) batch of Xtol. If I can remember, I'll run some rolls of 1600 through it and post the results.

The 1600 seems to have a nice grain, considering it's 1600 especially. I also like the tonality and contrast of it.

So many people have always told me that Neopan 1600 is 'really 1250' but ya know.. I've always shot it at 1600 and gotten awesome results - it would be my "go to" film for shooting bands in clubs and such.

So many people have always told me that Neopan 1600 is 'really 1250'...

For me, this film really sings at an E.I. of 800. Great shadow that I find lacking at 1600.

In Xtol 1:1, BTW.

Thanks for the compliments (at least I think they're compliments) ... that roll sat undeveloped for a long time ... years. When I processed it and saw the neg, I was stunned. First of all, I barely remember taking it; in fact, I don't even know how to date the thing. The framed photo of the baby could be either my great-niece ... or her mom!

Second, what in the world was I thinking when I made the shot? Actually, I wasn't thinking at all, I was just reacting, which turned out to be a good thing. Since the doll had been around our family for ages and ages, it didn't seem scary to me at the time. But the photo is something entirely different!

Don't mean to hijack this thread, especially since it's an evil SLR shot. 😀

hehe.. Kev, the canon 50 f1.2 may be "shorter" in length than the Nokton but it's wider in "girth" 😀
