Taking the R-D1 and 28mm to the zoo

Hey

I went to a pretty big zoo here in Sweden a few days ago and I made the decision to leave my 5Dmkii in the car and just bring the R-D1 and the 28mm Ultron. At times it seemed a bit stupid, but I really enjoyed having only this kit with me as it really didn't allow me to try any of the "standard animals in the zoo" shots (think "guys with zoom lenses standing in a long row getting that gorilla shot").

Instead I tried to capture other aspects of the zoo and include the visitors in the photos and so on. I really enjoyed it, and the R-D1 worked flawlessly despite a bit of rain on and off. My biggest mistake was forgetting to bring my other SD card though..

I just wanted to share some shots, I hope I'm not posting to much crap here! I'm really enjoying this forum and also my R-D1 so I just want to add to this part of the forum whenever I can. :)

There are some more shots here for those that are interested, and some short texts to go with each shot.

All these shots were processed with the VSCO film presets for Aperture if anyone is wondering. ;)

i think at the zoo an even wider lens might have an even bigger impact, and taking shots extremely close up would make it even more interesting. the crop of the r-d1 can make even a 28mm lens a bit tight.

i have a grd III with 21mm adapter and i think i might try a photo outing like you did here, it might be interesting!
 
God that elephant looks sad and pathetic. Can't believe he's having a good time in the cold in Sweden. The Zebra humping shot is funny

Yeah, you might have a point there. Personally though I'm not very used to wider views and up until about a year ago I was pretty much preferring telephoto.

When I got my X100 back then though I started enjoying wider views more, and since then I've kept away from the tele ranges.

However, I really don't like too much distortion, and I haven't gotten used to much wider FOV than the X100 yet, so I guess it'll be some time before I venture even wider. ;)

Yeah, I may have framed that shot to make it look even more pathetic though. :) But I agree, and especially elephants I always find look very depressed.

However, generally I would say that this particular zoo is quite high standards and the animals have a lot more space than I've seen in many other places.

There were two turtles in a position similiar to your zebras, but I don't know about animal porn, my kids might see this someday. :)
