I've heard that at the moment Leica has its biggest sales in nowhere but Japan. Hence, I assume there are a lot of journalistic photography going on in there. I would like to see some talented Japanese journalists and their work that currently work in Asia. So, if you folks have any interesting links in your Firefox bookmarks, please share. Much appreciated!!! AK

Have you checked out http://tokyocamerastyle.com?

The author indicates that most people who he has seen on the streets of japan that own Leica are usually 25-35 years old. I have no doubt that there is a bigger surge of purchases from these younger generations... It's neat to see how the camera's are "modified" or styled to the personal taste of the owner.

TommyOshima is great photography by the way.

Besides Leica, I've heard that makers of high quality expensive products such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Ducati (just to name a few) also have their biggest sales in Japan. The Japanese certainly appreciate luxury products. No doubt there are many Leica collectors, but I also notice people shooting Leicas quite often here, so it's good to see that some of them are getting good use.

Thanks for all the links.

Second helens suggestion with Junku Newcleus. He has a great eye and produces spontaneous street/night work that is Japan centric, but certainly still retains a universal appeal. I adore his high contrast images.

Some technical details about him that I read. Often he does scan directly from Ilford prints - he does his own dark room printing. He also uses Fuji Neopan 1600 both day and night, souped in D76 1:1 at 26C for 6 1/2 minutes. I respect that he has created his own unique authorship with the technical side of things. Up until he produced his current series, there wasn't anyone using that combination as successfully as he has done and gone mainstream- with an old Leica summarit 1.5 & summaron, coupled with fast film.

He has had a number of exhibitions in Tokyo and his style has spawned a number of photogs who have tried to copy his style. When viewed next to Daido's work, Newcleus seems to capture more of the humanity of his subjects. There doesn't seem to be as much of the debauched dark side, however a lot of his work is dark in nature. His work is often centered around Tokyo's after hours bars and I think that within 5 years he will have created a seminal body of work unrivalled in that genre in Japan.

I there is one thing that I have learnt when viewing his work, is that its important to find a developer/film combination that your happy with and then concentrate on the shooting aspect. I diddle around toying with too many film/developer combinations and I have lost a number of shots in processing due to experimentation. Anyway.

though it's a little tricky to find info on it, look up the Provoke era of postwar photography in Japan. Not "street photography" per se, but it was groundbreaking, influential work. There is a show coming up at SF MoMA

I looked up both those photographers and found their work so-so. There was not much sense of place, culture or moment. Seemed very street snappy/flikr to me, rather than the cream of what Japan has to offer. This is not intended as cruel or unpleasant, just my take on it.
