Taping over camera names/types

I actually painted out the nasty Dulux white logo on the Pentax K10d and a strip of leather put paid to the Pansonic L1.
The others remaim unmolested.

Funny story. Somewhere in my files, I have a five shot sequence from back in the day when I was shooting a Nikon F with an F36 motor. I was shooting a runway fashion show, and behind the model, in a perfect sync with each frame, is a woman leaning toward me staring at my camera mouthing N I K O N.

I don't because the unfriendly look on my face usually tells people not to bother asking about my cameras. When I have been asked (ala JP Owens), it is usually by younger women and older men... neither of which I find annoying in a gear whore type of way.

However, when I wear my camera around my neck and notice people staring at my chest... I think to myself that it must be how women feel when men oggle them (obvious difference in creep factor aside). 😉

I tape the names and logos on all my cameras (three including the V-1 my son is using) just because I've come to like the look of sterile cameras (and watches). It started in 1987 when I spent 6 months in India with my then brand new M6. I had every bit of metal covered in gaffer tape to protect the finish 😀. Those were the days when Leicas appreciated with age or at least held their value 🙁. It looked terrible but nobody was going to steal it.

cheers,
clay

I'm with Roger in this one. I won't tape logos or names because... why bother? But then, I can see why some other people do it and understand their reasoning.

Actually, some of my red-dot Leicas have stopped traffic with their red dot! 🙂

No reason to tape over a name or logo for me.
It comes down to personal preference and how you want your camera to look.

I've always felt that a thief doesn't care what kind of camera it is, just that it's a camera.
And people will always stop and talk no matter what kind of camera it is if they are photographers or interested in cameras.

I've filled/taped the logos on my street cameras, specifically a Canon 5d Mk1, Sony Rx100 mk1 and the Ricoh GR.

Not because I think it magically makes them invisible, but because in all three cases the contrast of white type on a black background catches the eye when it's moving.

Blacking the logo just knocks the contrast back I prefer the look, and in practice I think they catch the eye less.

Maybe there's a placebo effect element to it, but I'm ok with that, whatever helps.

I have an APSC slr that I've taped up in order to make it look banged up, that one goes to some less than safe areas, and looks like it's not worth stealing.

Oh also, I never use the branded straps, partially because they attract attention, but mostly because they're rubbish, I switch them all.

interesting responses - keep em coming.

I always thought it was something the young "artist" did.
You know, as a way of proclaiming " i am much better than this camera"

someone should make a metal fujifilm logotype sticker to cover the built-in flash on the fuji x100. i'd buy that, even whilst mocking people who tape over their leica red dot! 🙂
