Taping over camera names/types

You check out my avatar with the googly eyes. This is the new secret weapon. Nothing to read, but people often crack an involuntary smile.

Very nice! 🙂

..Iv'e heard of a lot of RED tape - but ....

My Grandaughters like plasters with pictures on them - perfect for upset cameras maybe ?

I really must black out my Sony A290 so that no-one knows what a cheapskate I am !!!

I don't understand what is the question. Whoever hide the camera maker and/or model does it for some reason, depending on what it is it may or may not make sense. I know one guy who is a pro and have been partially supported by a certain camera maker who claims that after receiving the sponsorship he covered other logos both as an appreciation of the fact he was supported and to express that having his name associated to a camera costs money. Does it make sense? No idea, nobody ever gave me any camera for free, but maybe it does... Some wildlife photographers claim that the white logo makes the camera much more visible to animals. Does it make sense? No idea again, but after all some animals are used to avoid predators who are just a few inches in size, so it is not completely impossible that white logos, or even more the shining bits such as the golden "FX" found on Nikon Full Frame cameras, might actually be clearly visible if they catch the light in the proper way and so after hearing the story I taped some of my cameras. Many people seem to do the same to avoid attracting attention. This really I don't buy, but if they feel more relaxed that way, then probably this helps their photography, so why not after all? I only tape what is used with animals.

I have a photojournalist friend who taped over the logos on his camera (a PJ-generic Canon full frame DSLR). When I asked him why, he didn't seem to have any kind of answer. I guess he just figured it's something PJ's do. Or something.

I wouldn't tape over mine unless I was photographing in combat or something where reflective auto-focus assist light lenses, or gold Nikon lens badging, or white logos, or whatever, might show up in the dark. Not that this is ever going to happen to me. Otherwise, why gunk up a perfectly good camera with sticky gaff tape residue?

Just my $0.02 - worth exactly what it says on the tin. 😉

I recently discovered what was randomly changing the aperture setting on a dSLR... the accessory grip has a duplicate rear scroll wheel and shutter release on the bottom corner for use with portrait-orientation hold. As the camera moved against my clothing, the scroll wheel would be turned randomly from the setting I'd chosen for the circumstances.

Since I don't use that grip scroll wheel voluntarily, I taped it over. Similarly on the same camera the shutter speed dial is taped at the A position as it moves too easily... it's easy enough to peel the tape back if needed. So there's other than cosmetic reasons. 😉

When I bought my Df I freaked the people in the shop because I'd brought a decent strap with me (Kik-90) and fitted it as soon as I unpacked the camera. "What are you doing?" they asked. "Fitting a decent strap," I replied.
Come to think of it, I hardly use manufacturer straps especially with the model number on. It seems quite natural to me to settle on a favourite strap and stick with it. I don't need other people knowing the camera model, it just seems a distraction and free advertising.
I don't bother taping camera model numbers. There is the risk some nerd will try to talk to me about the camera when I am busy, but then there is also the risk some nerd will try to talk to me about what the camera is if I hide the model number too.

Anyone who has come up to ask me about my camera already knew it was a Leica. Tape wouldn't have changed that.

I want one of those Hello Kitty cameras, now. You people broke me.

I am hereby contributing to this thread since it is without doubt one of the most popular topics of discussion on this and other photo forums.

Feels kind of molester-y when someone walks up, stares at your camera, and tries to strike up a conversation. Never talk to strangers!

It's just a play on what we tell children about not engaging with adults they don't know. Of course, we adults talk to strangers all the time!

It isn't the talking to strangers that will be a problem, it is the going with that is.... If you raise your children right, they won't go with strangers but can talk to them.Don't worry too much.

And to be honest, I think the Hello Kitty M6 is very attractive and one of the best special edition M6's - so, I might be a raving mad man
