Hello all,

I'm in the market for a nice little tele-elmarit 90mm to use on my M2 and occasionally in the wife's M8. I spotted one in Finland, at a what seems like a decent price, but it is advertised as having damage to the coating on the rear element.

I've not come across something like this before, so could anyone off some advice on what kind of impact is likely to be on the images it produces? Loss of contrast, flare or visible artifacts in the frame?

I hope it's ok to post a link to the listing, if not I will remove...

The damaged spot seems to be visible in the last picture. I'd be most grateful for any advice, would you give it a wide berth or take a punt?

Thank you,
John.

This is a well known problem with the 90mm Tele-Elmarit. The effect might be negligible but should effect price.

Thank you for the reply, interesting to see that you say this is a well known problem, perhaps somebody might pop up that has owned one ina similar condition?

I would say that the price does reflect the defect, it is a good €200 cheaper than ones that are rated in top condition.

As mentioned, some of those lenses had issues, but from what I see in your photos, the lens you're looking at looks great! That little dot on the rear element will mean nothing in terms of IQ.

Thank you Steve, I've bought the lens so we'll find out what it's like soon. I have 14 days to return it if I don't get on with it.
