temp during stop, fix, and wash...

Okay, I can understand how temperature during development is important.

However.. does temp during stop, fixing, and wash really make much of a difference, provided you spend approrpriate time with the negs?

I have the problem that my tap water changes temp depenging on the outside temps. i.e. in winter, now, it's about 16C and in the summer it's about 23C. *shrug*

Room temperature should be fine for the rest of the steps after developer. I remember a teacher once telling my class that if the fixer or hypo clear was a lot hotter than the other liquids the gelatin base could crack or something. My school memory is a lil hazy heh.

I've seen tests with hot"er" liquides after stopping and the results were, you need a HUGE difference to get reticulation. I think films today a (IMHO) are a lot more resilient. I only worry about the developer these days but when I lived in NYC, I used H20 that was room temp to do my stop and wash.

It's not a bad idea to keep everything in the same ballpark, at least, esp. developer, stop, and washes. I fill up a big bucket with 68 degree water. That way, my developer, stop rinse and all washes are at 68. My fix and permawash are a bit colder in winter, a bit warmer in summer.

Keep everything the same temp... too much of a difference can cause the gelatin to contract, causing grain to clump. Difference btwn 16 & 23 isn't all that much.

My experience is that the negatives can be curled quite badly if the temps are not fairly close. It's very easy to keep things the same temp, so that's both what I do and suggest. Anyway, negative curling is almost non-existent when I keep the chems identical, or nearly so.
