temperature, contrast and time

so last night i developed 2 rolls in d-76 at 65' for about 8 mintes. Came out great. Tonight 2 more rolls in d-76 at 68' for about 7 minutes and they are are light..not much contrast.

Should it not be about the same? I followed the kodak times.

There is a difference but I do not remember (too many years). Great question for Tom A and a few others. I want to say that faster is higher contrast, but you need to be very careful about actual times (seconds matter) and maintaining temperature.

Those times sound about right and I would expect both rolls (if properly exposed) to develop normally.

Some possibilities:
The film was underexposed to begin with.
Your developer is old or worn out. Did you pour the used developer from your last batch of film back in the bottle?
The developer temp wasn't really 68 degrees but much colder, or it started at 68 but got cold.
Your timer is off?

I would bet option one is a possibility :0

the more I looked at the negs I think i might have underexposed a bit hence the lightness.

Developer is new. I do not re use. It was about 68. I checked going in and kwpt all other chemicals about the same temp as well.

More than that, what matters is the kind of light you had, and knowing how to meter it to place that precise contrast situation on film, which has a much shorter range than human eyes.

Only after that, you can help it just a little bit more with the best possible developing, again depending on scene's contrast, but what really matters is good exposition.
