Tempted by a 90 'cron...

ARGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!! MORE LEICA LENS LUST!!!!! :bang:

I don't need it. I have a CV 90/3.5. The 90 'Cron is bigger and bulkier.

So why am I tempted, just because it's a nice lens at a good price?

Sorry everyone, just needed to get that out of my system.

I need another coffee.......(Tim goes off sulking)

Hey man, sometimes you just need a couple of extra f stops. It makes all the difference between having to shoot at 30th of a second versus a 125th of a second. Plus, the cron adds to the already strikingly good looks of the M6. ;)

It's a great lens, very sharp and heavy. Almost too sharp for portraits but nice for everything else!

Tim... what do you need one for? Like you, I sometimes have this kind of split personality about GAS. Part of me says "don't bother", the other one whispers "Don't you have a credit card in your wallet?"

I've been good at selective deafness these last days...

<Come on! We all know you too long for a nice Elmarit 145/f2.8. You want one, you need one, can't live without it... And to think of the photos you've missed for not having one!! :bang: >

No, Tim, you really don't need a 'cron 90/2. It's heavy, it's big...

<It's Leica! :) :) :) Hey, are you a chicken, are you a man? When are you gonna cross the road?>

LOL, Francisco; I enjoy hearing of your attempts at rationalization! We probably should just give up the whole concept of "need" and just stick with an honest "I want!" But having everything, even if we could afford it, would be a confusing mess. So we still wrestle with budget versus conscience versus desire to acquire!

I usually manage to arrive at some relatively simple justification after thrashing it out for a while. Recently I decided I'd like a relatively fast wide angle lens. Like the 24mm Elmarit, gosh they're hard to find used. Then the 28 Summicron, yeah, that's the ticket, one stop faster and I don't even need an accessory viewfinder. But this led to considering a 21mm f/2.8, and the least expensive quality solution to that was a Contax G1+Biogon so I just got out the credit card and did it.

So, Tiim, forget "need" and think of the situations where the 3.5/90 just can't do the job, but the f/2 lens could pull it off. If you can't think of any, well, there's your cheap answer! But I'll bet you're more imaginitive than that. :)

Tim, you're hopeless! You're suffering from Leicalust right after sending away the Contax - <shake head> ?!

Note to self-
Visit doctor before trip to Ozzy and get vaccinated to ward off that nasty case of Leicalust thats going around.

Stu :)

I have an older Canadian 'Cron, black one, soooo heavy and very hard to focus with R2 body. Anyway, it is a kind of monster you have to have, I just live with it with the need of a bigger camera bag, won't regret it at all!

I understand the temptation. It happened to me recently on the SLR side. Purchased a Zuiko 90mm f/2 macro for my OM-1. It's an extraordinary lens and set me back a bit... Glad to have it though.

I'm as guilty of having leica lust in my heart as the next man/woman. But I've come to the conclusion that certain focal lengths are just not practical. This is very subjective and tailored to the shooting style of the individual. For instance, I recently tried to note in a pad, how often I actually needed and wanted a longer focal length (ie >50mm) during a 2 month period. It turned out to be about 3 times. For that, would I have wanted to haul a heavy albeit very capable 90mm or 75mm lux around? The answer for me was no. Perhaps you can try that as well, note during a set period of time, how many times you actually would have needed and used the 90 cron versus the cost of space and weight and an aching back. Not trying to dampen your enthusiasm ... after all, arent GAS(s) kind of like first crushes ? ;-) good luck

Tom that's an interesting testing concept, but I think results will tend to fall at the minimum-use end of the scale. You'll want the lens *at least* that often, and surely more.
That's assuming of course that other photogs do what I do, and that is adjust my mental angle of view to the lens on the camera. So I'm seeing picture opportunities with that mental framing. Some other framing has to be pretty stong & obvious to intrude on that concentration. It's a tougher chore (at least for me) to try to be alert to another angle of view as well.

I took the 35 and the 90 to Kenya last year. I found it was pretty much the ideal combination for what I was doing there - mostly landscapes, but using the 90 to change framing and perspective. Although I don't use the 90 often, I do use it enough to want to carry one with me.

And a bit of logic has kicked in, too. All of what I use a 90 for is outdoors in usually good-ish light. And usually after I've walked a distance. So a big heavy f2 lens is categorically not fitting into my needs. There. I've justified resisting the 90 'cron.
However.....a 90 Elmar or Elmarit may just be a different story
In the current lens line there's a really nice 90/4 Elmar collapsible - very small and light. I better not even be tempted to go and have a look at one of them! :)

Sounds Cron'ic.

OF COURSE YOU WANT ONE! Who Wouldn't!!!

I have a 90mm F2.8 Tele-Elmarit, 9cm F4 Elmar, 8.5cm F2 Nikkor, Canon 100mm F4, and 10.5cm F2.5 Nikkor AND I STILL WANT ONE!

Go ahead, BUY IT, get it out of your system. You can always sell it later of you change your mind.

Things to do...

1. Poison Brian before he poison other people's mind like he did before with "Everyone should get an M3".
2. Start flame wars every so often so I get banned from RFF forever.
3. Get a bank loan then buy a truck load of Agfa Scala. Spend the rest of my life shooting Scala and paying the debt.

Yes, Brian is excellent at subliminal Leica buying messages, but this time I think he's failed (at least with me). Half the reason I went Rangefindering in the first place was size and bulk. So as I said earlier in this thread, a 90 'cron is the antithesis (sp?) of what I actually need or would use. And I already buy too much stuff just on a whim which I then sell on.
Ah, but one of these..... http://www.leica-camera.com/produkte/msystem/objektive/makro/index_e.html .....that's a different story.......

But Kris, maybe you want to buy a 90 'cron? It's a black one, late model with the collapsible hood, in great condition, AUD$1000. I could bring it down for you at the end of the month....

I like the last line "Features a Belt Loop so that the Device may Conveniently Reach Around into Your Wallet".

"Poison Brian" Join the line. Forget Rat Poison. You build a Tolerance to it.

You ain't kidding.......checked the Aus retail price today, the lens (new) goes for AUD $2600 (although I'm sure I could get it cheaper) and the Macro attachment is AUD $1500!!!!! To allow you to focus from .5m to .7 m!!!!!

Not only does it reach into your wallet it hoovers it dry!!!
