California (Bay Area, Northern) Tenderloin USA - Photo Journal

A couple of local street photographer friends (of a lot of us bay area shooters), Brad Evans and Travis Jensen, have produced a book on the Tenderloin district. If you shoot in San Francisco, then you've probably met Brad and Travis. They do good street portrait work. All proceeds from the book (above and beyond the printing costs) go to a local Tenderloin charity.

awesome: great concept, fotos, and charity to boot. Dont know if I will pick up a copy, its almost too close to home for me, living in SF and working at a local hospital in the ED, I'm reminded of the challenges of this (stereotyped) population, every day i go to work.

Tenderloin district was the red light district in NYC back in the early 1900's....

I managed to get the first copy released by Brad & Travis and I must say that it's a wonderful collection. The TL, for the most part gets a negative rap in the City but as photographers they dig deep and get some wonderful photographs but also tell a story of some people that live in the community. I plan on getting more copies myself to give as gifts and knowing the proceeds go to a reputable non profit is an added plus. Brad and Travis have been working on this project and I saw myself the dedication they have to it. These guys were out there, sometimes at 6:30 in the morning. I tip my hat to them as they deserve it.

When you click on order you can preview the book. I really like how the photos portray an even balance of what the tenderloin is, not just the stereotypical. There's far more to this neighborhood than drugs and homeless people and their photos do a good job representing this.

I got my copy a couple of days ago. Nice quality on the printing. Interesting layout. I've seen a lot of the images before (Flickr and various blogs), but it's nice to see the assembled project. It's also interesting to see the similarities of the styles of the two photographers.
