Terrible performance from site

something funny going on.

Currently Active Users: 601 (72 members and 529 guests)

Regardless, moving to a new facility shortly.

It doesn't really matter at what time I try to connect. Even when the US is still asleep connecting is horrendous, getting worse after noon (when I guess the US wakes up, compared to GMT+1).

I finally got on now after trying for several hours and not being able to even get the site to come up.

Jorge,

I would be looking at where all of those guests have been coming from. This looks really suspicious, especially in view of the several disgruntled members that have left recently.

The site was out all morning, with "Not Found" messages, and yesterday I was getting "Connection Refused". SYN attack maybe?

Maybe it is time to require a login before surfing the site.

Stats show 90-plus members and more than 500 guests logged on just now. That seems uncharacteristically high for the number of visitors. And this morning there as an all-time high of 622 visitors. That must have something to do with the "denial-of-service" concerns. We're interesting, but not THAT interesting.

I get a lot of referrer spam at the moment, obviously from three IP Numbers belonging to a chinese company. I blocked them in the firewall 🙂

Has it occurred to anyone that all those 'visitors' could just be members trying to raise the site and being counted multiple times? When the site is slow it is easy to post the same message several times, it could be the same for the site stats.

If server counts every time I click "reload" in an attempt to get to RFF, then I'm guilt as sin for many of these "visitor counts". I'm still trying to be patient, but sometimes fail!

That would depend on what the software declares as an "Active User". Hopefully they were smart enough to wait until the process was successful. Opening multiple windows to RFF does not result in an increase in the number of "logged in users".

It may be a software glitch, with the log-in process hanging. Or it may be someone using a "corrupted" login procedure that holds-off on the complete handshake, essentially tying up a slot. Hard to say. ANYWAY, collected packets should be the give-away. If the software is hanging on the RFF end, it will be easy to tell.

Then just squirt a little Ronsonol on the server. No.... that may be bad in this case. I've only caused one computer to catch on fire, and that was all software.

Yes it has. I never thought the previous high online total (~330) was legit. I thought it was something similar to what you describe. In fact the message that I posted just before yours, never completed on my end (according to what I was seeing). I ended up stopping and going elsewhere.

.

At the time I still have a request response time of about 50 sec, on a DSL line and this is the first time since 6 hours that I really thought the site up.

As yeterdy I got so many DB errors that I first thought of a prob caused by a software bug There were a lot of posts and threads deleted and I thought maybe the DB got off rail while re-indexing it's content.

But these probs came up so suddenly out of nowhere yesterday during the (German) afternoon, , at around 4:00 o'clock, from one minute to the next, that one could assume somebody keeps the server busy with destructive intentions, what do the log files say ?

Regards,
Bertram

I have experienced the same thing with every message I have posted for the past two days. Maybe Jorge should start hassling the Host. Or reprogram the server with a sledgehammer.
As for someone deliberately trying to tie up the server or sabotage the site, that is very unlikely. Lets not start getting paranoid or going off on witch-hunts eh?

I will be moving to a dedicated server over the next dew days. We should see improvements very soon. but for now we just have to suffer 🙁

The site seemed normal around 10:00AM Eastern Time (US) for about fifteen minutes then went "south" again.

I can only get in via: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/

Then I can view the most recent post in any forum but cannot see all the threads in each forum when I try to expand. Get an error message when I try to do that.

I don't think this is simply the result of a lot of legit activity.
