How do I most easily test alignment of the rangefinder? I just fell on my back while holding one-day-old rangefinder and might have caused some indirect shock to it.

Can just focusing things at different distance through the viewfinder be good enough for testing if my camera is still in alignment?

A quick test is to take a ruler/yard stick, and use it to measure out the distance from the film plane to an object. Use the rangefinder to align the double image of the object, and read the lens barrel focus distance. It should be the same as the measured distance..

If you have a known to be good lens, then use tape measure to place the camera exactly say 1m from your target, and focus the lens by using RF. If the scale says 1m then your RF is OK close-up. Do the same with a very distant subject to check infinity. And remember: a few km/miles distant building is not infinity. It should be just before infinity.
