Hi fellow forum members,

anybody care to explain what the test-button on a Canon Flash Unit Y is supposed to do? And the connections "ext" and "self ext"? I guess "ext" means "external" but "self ext"??? Or if somebody could point me to a manual I'd be very grateful.

Bye, Bart

The test button lights up a small bulb on the thing when it is charged up, but does not fire the flash. Just a way to let you know when the flash is ready to go. I may have a manual at home somewhere, and if I find enough time scan it and post

A small light bulb? Do you mean the red button itself should light up? Or is the self test light hidden somewhere else? There is definitely nothing that lights up when I press "self test", so I guess the light is broken. If you would find the time to scan the manual I would be very grateful!

Circuit Test Button

From Page 4 of the Series Y Manual
"To be used in conjunction with Canon Flash Tester (see page 23)"

Page 20
"Canon Flash Tester
Electrical contacts of flash as well as speedlight synchronizer built within the Canon Camera can be checked by using Canon Flash Tester as shown above which is sold as one of the Canon Flash Unit accessories (see page 23). It will enable you to check the built-in synchronizer periodically before you leave for an important assignment. Instructions are given with the Flash Tester."

"Self EXT" refers to EXTending the flash unit from the camera (think Sync cord - Requires an adapter for the flash bracket) and "EXT" is used to connect to a second flash (Canon Side Lighting Unit)

Bart-K, send me a PM with an email address and I will send you the .pdf files of the scanned manual for the Flash Unit Y- it's 16 files about 350K max size, about 2.2 MM total.

By the way, in my initial response I was thinking of the V flash unit that has the illuminating bulb.
