This camera has surprised me positively in many ways but yesterday with high sensitivities. The stair case in the picture was very dimly lit and I had to use ISO 1600. There’s visible noise only in the shadow areas and even that looks like nice film grain. Of course all this is hardly visible on this small web size jpg.

Excellent, what a wild staircase.

As far as high ISO's go I prefer Neopan1600 to what the R-D1 produces but I know at a push its there as a last resort, as I found at a wedding I did last year...

Of course, all the D3 wannabes will laugh at its performance whilst showing minute web jpgs of how wonderful their $6k camera is @ ISO25600 ;)

it would interesting to see some iso1600 shots in color, at nighttime with some light spots (i mean streets lamps etc).

Great shot and impressive @ ISO1600 - now I must reconsider the R-D1 over the M8..

sheesh :)

When all is said and done, I believe the R-D1 will be remebered as a classic and the M8 as just Leica's first step in digital bodies. Buy the R-D1!

Even after more than 2 years use my R-D1 still continues to impress me with its low light capabilities. The attached was shot last Thursday night in Brick Lane in London's East End lit mainly by the street lights with just the last vestiges of daylight. The colour original was at least 1 stop under exposed so its more like 3200 iso.

Beautiful! I love the many definable tones between black and white. And the detail in the shadow beneath his hat. Well done.
