I'm going to take a guess, 24 is for 24MP sensor and 0 for version 0.
So next iteration might be M typ 241, 24MP version 1 or M Typ 360 for 36MP sensor and so on...
Maybe that's it.

When I get my 240 I will call it 'Mugsy!'

Well-known
dumb question...the name, m240?
what's the 240 stand for?
It is the Leica internal model number of the body. The M-E is 220, somewhere I've read, what the M9 is. They all have the numbers, but they never became aware to the normal customer, until now.
Look at this interview: http://www.imaging-resource.com/new...ley-how-the-leica-m-and-s-may-be-the-porsches
Near the second M-Picture, it is explained.

Hi, Jono....missed this with all the surgeries and hospital and such...glad to see you posting here again and thank you so much!
I reckon I need to find a part-time job to start saving for the M240 now.

I think we can compare Leica to Porsche.
Porsche would not be here any more if they did not adapt to the needs of the current markets. Sure they upset the classic die hard 911 lovers. As a starter they put cupholders in the car. Now look at their line-up. Yes the classic 911 style is still there but entirely modernized its an icon / design that will last. To stay in business they have even added an SUV with a DIESEL engine.
Yes the Leica MP will be around until there is no more 35mm film in the world. Just to satisfy the purists and to stay connected to their roots (Apple iPod Classic is a similar example...). A modernized M with its distinct character and handling. An a line-up of compact and advanced digital camera's to fill the cap. Now lets see what comes next.

I'm sure some guy in 1932 wrote a similar rant when they added a rangefinder. I presume enough people ranted about all the stupid, unnecessary features in the M3 (combined VF/RF!, framelines!, bayonet mount!) that they continued w/the IIIf (& went ahead w/the hybrid IIIg in 1957).
Aww, it was just a rant and I don't want to throw a wet blanket over this new camera. No, the M 240 is not bad in and of itself. It really does retain all the goodness of the old M cameras...
But it also spells the end of Leica as we have known it, in my humble opinion. And maybe this is a good thing and perhaps it is finally time for Leica to move on. After all, it is still possible to use the M 240 just like any other Leica M...
If you have the personal self control to do it. Sadly, very few people that I know have that self control, and those digital "improvements" will quickly become absolutely necessary. And now that they are here, more of these "features" will need to be added, and quickly, or else Leica will lose ground in the digital feature wars.

Jonathan, excellent article, more excellent are the pictures.
And I like the reason why you chose to be mum about the video capabilities of the camera
