Tethering to an Ipad?

So, today I picked up a gig for a new Salon web page which will include architectural interior shots, portraits, product shots and whatever else I can pull together.

Got the Nikon SB-24 working like a champ on the X1 today.... love that ol' flash unit as I can bounce it everywhere including behind me as I always did at weddings. So now I am thinking through some portraits and the interior shots. And other things like:

The Ipad...yeah, either the Ipad 2 or the mini. I am leaning toward a mini as I am more likely to carry it with me and wonder if there is a good way to tether to the Ipad or mini for a preview of each shot while on location, using the X1.

Anyone tried this? 🙂

I haven't tried it yet but how about the link below? I was looking for use with a Pentax and a notebook, but the principal should be the same?

Hope you're doing well Dave. Here's my simple suggestion to your question. I would look at purchasing the Eye-Fi Pro X2 card for your camera. They have an app for the iPad or iPhone for that matter that will automatically transfer your images from the card in your camera to the iPad.

I just checked their website and this card is supported in the Leica X1 and will transfer DNG RAW files too.

I have the non Pro version of the card and it only transfers JPGs.

The Pro version will also GeoTag your images too.

Your only challenge will be keeping the camera and iPad charged as the onboard WiFi on the SD card does suck the battery a bit quick and of course keeping the screen turned on on the iPad will also drain the battery a bit faster.

But I think this would be the simplest solution that I can think of without jailbreaking, etc.

Hi, Duane...

Hope all is well since we left Asheville.🙂 You and Martin have revived my memory about the Eye-fi card but did not know if the card was compatible with the X1.

I may be doing some studio portraits while also doing the architectural shots so it would be nice to have the camera on the tripod with the iPad mini (if I get one) alongside to check the images. Also, macro shots and product shots vary so much with a slight movement that preview on the iPad would be time well-spent.

Gettin' closer to understanding if and how an iPad may be an assistance in my workflow rather than an entertainment device.:angel:

I have used EyeFi. It works. It’s pretty fast with jpg, RAW images are of course much larger so it takes longer to transmit them.

EyeFi software I found somewhat confusing however. Maybe they’ve improved it since I last tested it, but it wasn’t all that intuitive.

And yes, it will drain your X1 battery, so you’ll need a spare or two. The iPad battery lasts and lasts, no worries there. 😉
