Purchased my Nikkormat FTn in 1971; a means of dipping a toe into SLR's after fiteen years of Nikon S-2 rangefinders.

Still use it today as a second SLR to my F2.

I bought a chrome one in 1971 and a black one in 1974. In 1994 I bought my first Nikon rangefinder: S2.

I did not like the models FT2 and FT3 because they had built-in hotshoes. Their styling is ugly too. The FTn is beautiful, both in black and chrome.

Erik, these are a really fond look back at the Europe I saw on my first trip over in the '70s. It was all gone by my second in the mid '90s. Just amazing work! I couldn't pick a favorite, so I bookmarked your flickr page!

Thank you, Vic. Yes, it is all gone. I am happy to have some pictures from those years. The force of photography is that it preserves time in a way.

My first 35mm camera was a Nikkormat FTn purchased at the PX in 1968. I still have and use it although not as much as I once did. I moved from a Yashica-mat LM (which I still have) to the Nikkormat so it was a joy to have such a handy camera. I now also have two EL's which are nice but not in the same way the FTn is.

time to revise this thread;
i just added a combo nikomat ftn and pc-nikkor 35/2.8 to my equipment cabinet.
can't wait to shoot it; actually i bought the ftn because it's the cheapest option to shoot with the pc-nikkor, the long-wanted but never tried before lens.
first impression is very good. i like pure mechanical boy like this. i had used nikon f4/ f3/ fm2 but surprisingly this ftn impressed me best, so far.

Erik,

Can't agree with you more. :)

Since I now have my old black body paired with a chrome body, I was just checking the meters last week only to find that I need new batteries. Hmmm. What batteries should I buy? It has been a long time now and I haven't even been out to stores in months.

In addition to a pack of batteries, I need another 50mm lens. Currently I only have the old 50/1.8, what is your absolute favorite choice for a lens in the Ftn?

This is important, 🙂, picking a lens for the camera that will pull me out of film lockdown.:p

Thanks in advance, and becwell!

My lens on it is the old Nikkor H Auto 50mm f/2. The battery is the PX625A. Both are still going strong.

Good luck shooting, Dave, post your pictures here so we can all enjoy them!

Thanks, Erik! I will order a half dozen Wein cells from BHPhoto or Adorama!

I need to shoot a lot of good film in the freezer.

Now to find that 50mm Auto lens. Hmmm.

What a classy way to work through the rest of the pandemic. Thank you so much!

I have the 50 2.0 HC on my FS and it a great lens. Another to look at is the Micro-nikkor 55 2.8 Ai-S. It's a very versatile lens with surprisingly good performance from infinity to 1-1 macro focus.

This is with the Nikkor H Auto 50mm f/2, so not the multicoated variant (that is the Nikkor HC Auto 50mm f/2). Contrasty enough, blue coating. Old TriX, souped in D76.

Yes, it is an incredible lens. Today, in those digital years, things as bokeh and tonality get much more attention. These lenses from the 1970's are all the same, like clones.
