the 37th shot

For me I usually just keep shooting. Sometimes when I load the camera and have a shot on frame 0 I take a picture of my phone to get the date. Just in case I forget to write down the date when I change the film.
Great idea !
Certainly since I used to archive my films randomly without mentioning a date. Gives me a headache a few years later. :bang:

For my last frame, I usually run to the first availably mirror and make a selfportrait.
As I mostly shoot pictures of other people, I don't occur on the roll myself, I mostly keep it as last shot, or the first 2 to load the film.

I usually get 39 frames on my M6 now that I can load it properly. I just shoot the ones at the end as normal. Its the first one or two that are a bit experimental usually as I am not sure that they will come out!

I struggle with 36 exposure film and seldom use it unless I have to ... 24 frames seems much easier to deal with for some reason. By the time I get to the end of a 36 exposure roll I'm out of ideas and tend to become wasteful.

I usually don't bother with the 36th shot, let alone the 37th. Too much of a pain when your archival sleeves hold 7 strips of 5 frames.
Same here, I suspect you use Printfile sleeves too. Though I have on occassion been able to get 40 out of a 36 roll, loading in the dark helps.

Lately, I too feel 24 frames are easier to work. But I do try to shoot the last frame of a roll, until the lever or knob just plain refuses to advance.

Many of us have learned through experience the dangers of shooting those "bonus" frames.
At the start of the roll entire or partial frames may be ruined by exposure to ambient light during loading.
At the end the tape attaching the film to the spool may intrude into the image area of your final frame.

As a kid I always tried to squeeze in an extra frame or two per roll.
But they were usually throwaways, "portraits" of the family pet etc.
Nowadays I try to resist the temptation. Film is cheap.
